cross contamination is a big part of it. you might walk through the shit and a few hours later reach down and adjust your laces. in any case you must live in a pretty poison ivy-y area to "always" get a rash. don't touch anything, don't crawl into bed with your boots or hiking pants on, etc.

also is it possible to not be allergic to poison ivy or poison oak? I have been foinf /out/ since I was pretty young and have never gotten it

apparently not. i am actually eternally vigilent (to the point i recognize poison oak when it's just bare sticks in the winter) and haven gotten it in 8 years (last time i got it i was trying to get to a burning house across a gulch from our water supply, so i was a little distracted). it was probably 10 years before that i had had it before.

Yes. It is possible. However, that doesn't mean you should bathe in it; repeatedly exposing yourself to urushiol can cause an allergy to develop, possibly in an anaphylactic-shock kind of way.

Guy on my high school football team wore his camp counselor shirt under his pads one practice. Halfway through he's telling me about how he got his shirt stuffed with poison ivy as a prank and it was so bad that he "can almost still feel it". Turns out some of the oil had weathered the washing machine on the inside of the shirt's logo and his sweat brought it out. Poor bastard ended up with a relief of the logo emblazoned on to his chest in welts.

They make a gel you can put on beforehand for that. Pic related. Also they make soaps and other things for for getting it off quick.
