Soft mouth should be an innate characteristic of a good Lab. Always reward pup for a speedy retrieve, don't play tug, and keep designated chew toys distinct and separate from retrieving toys.
A "forced fetch" can be taught as part of formal training after the secondary teeth set, but it's pretty intense. Best done by a pro, or with a very light touch.
