I just watched some show on NatGeo about the powergrid going out. Shit fucked me up yo, legit scurred that i'm woefully unprepped for such a thing.

How would out cope? I live in a rural farming community near a large river, so I feel my basic needs would be taken care of. But the other people scare the dogshit out of me. Can i reasonably go innadesert and just let my house and home burn?

What is actually likely to happen in our lifetimes is gradual deterioration and division of society to the point of politicized paramilitary groups gaining prominence and perhaps civil war.
The lower the population density where you live the better. Knowing your neighbors and a nearby farmer is probably a good idea. And owning a firearm. The ability to produce and preserve some of your own food. Having a decent supply of non-perishable necessities. Especially potential bartergoods like medicine and ammo, should supplylines fail or prices skyrocket.

I'm looking at getting a rifle, a house with a garden + chickens and the option to heat by firewood, a couple of sacks of rice in the basement and the tools and skills required to live as comfortably as possible in a less stable, less affluent future.

I think everyone should strive for a frugal, wholesome, down to earth, somewhat selfsufficient/resilient lifestyle even in the best of times anyway.

I just lost power a few days ago and that shit was scary!

Thought I had forgotten to pay my bill and started getting ready to bug out to my spot.

Trouble is my spot has no running water or fertile soil and I can't carry enough to remain self-sufficient for more than a few days before seeking water.

And I don't have a seed bank anyway.

Seriously though as the other anon hints - it's unlikely to happen to such an extent and so quickly that most people can't do something about it.

You've near enough answered your own question here desu - your power went out so buy a generator and a couple of weeks worth of fuel.

If you're worried about water then buy some and store it, along with canned food for a week or two.

Here's what I learned:

You're going to have to keep an eye on all your shit, because people will be prowling around even more than usual, looking to steal some things.

I've decided to put most of my flashlights, lanterns, batteries, and bug spray in a 10 or 20 gallon clear rubbermaid container on a shelf in the laundry room. I have about half of that stuff in there already.
I never used to buy batteries because they can be expensive, and they expire. But now I will, because they are all promising to last ten years in storage, and I don't want to be caught without any.
I would rather spend the money now, and already have them instead of driving all over town.

If you head out for ice, don't forget to take your cooler. Buy one or two extra bags and take them to family or neighbors.

The Survival Bootcamp ebook he put out is pretty good too. Ideally you want to get out of a city when you get the slightest hint of a conflict. If you look at the siege of Sarajevo, and now the ongoing siege of Aleppo in Syria, the ways out of the city end up being sealed off by the opposition making escape difficult to impossible.

The current oil glut is based on Central Bank shenanigans (overly cheap debt,) and is going to come to an end, one way or another. People need to think beyond the end of the next quarter. It costs more to produce oil than the economy can sustain, and production will take a hit.

Peak oil seems like a problem indeed, because soon enough we'll need as much energy extracting and purifying it as we get out of it. I believe in the future, atleast for a time before we find substitutes, petroleum will be an expensive product mostly used for niche applications like air travel, certain plastics and perhaps top grade asphalt.

We're eventually gonna reach all kinds of peaks and unless we're prepared with long-term viable, resilient lifestyles we're gonna be in for a rough landing. So that part of my post still stands. Running the risk of derailing this into political shitflinging I'll say we're also reaching peak shitskin all over the west which is a collapse in and of itself. The racial tension/social division/polarization/identity politics/whatever aspect is accelerating daily and IMO it's naive to think it's gonna pan out peacefully, especially in parts of Europe.

Anyways you need to get on the solar power. I only have like 5k into my mostly DIY setup. In the summer I can generate 100% of my own power. Even in the winter when the sun is sub optimal I can generate 50%ish of my power needs. Hardest part was getting my system tied into the grid. I had to buy a commercial solution to manage my panels and batteries or the city wouldn't tie me in. That was like 1200 on it's own.

Planning on moving soon so i'm not expanded my system but when I move I plan to be fully energy independent.

You are wrong, oil prices are lower now because OPEC is trying to kill shale development in north america. 5 years ago the break even point on shale was $100+/barrel. 3 years ago it was 80 bucks, now some places are saying they can do it at 50. OPEC is trying to kill off shale research with price fixing then keep crude at just low enough of a price to keep shale research from firing back up but high enough that the Saudi Arabia goverment can continue to fund it's welfare state.

Also doesn't help OPEC that the global demand has been flat for the past few years thanks to better MPGs in the west and a stagnation of the second world (India not guzzling the oil the way everyone thought they would for example).

Plus China has been stockpiling oil for some unknown reason keeping prices kinda higher then they should be. Once they stop buying up crude the demand will drop even more.

Of all the world problems right now to worry about, expensive oil is not one of them
