not to say it's everything you'll EVER need in a compass, but if you're at the experience level that you have to ask here and don't already know what you're looking for it's a reliable, quality, inexpensive tool to help you learn what you like and need before shelling out $$$ for something you may never use much.

just buy a silva, I got a good price on an expedition 4 so that's what I want. Basically you jsut want something with a baseplate and a bezel. Declination lines and different map scales n shit are useful but not essential.

Any compass that isn't dollar store garbage or antique will get you through the day. Put $10 or $20 on it, and use the rest for your topo collection.
