If you care about being somebody important, and you aren't born into extreme wealth, sometimes you gotta accept having a little bit of debt in the current society, the way things are set up regarding college and whatnot.
Making the choice to go for stability and solvency over prestige is your choice to make, and is a valid one, but it isn't an objective one. People can make different choices.
