Tomorrow will be the 10 year anniversary of Dick Proenneke' death

In homage i plan on going on a hike innawoods and leave some food for the local critters, seeds for the wild birds and maybe plant a few tree saplings.

He kind of had it made since his brother was a bush pilot. It's hard to do what he did without a lifeline like that.

My question: Why do this? Everybody is aware, it doesn't throw a speck on the fact that he live for 30 years in the Alaskan mountains of all places.

Btw, his brother wasn't a bush pilot, but his friend Babe Alsworth was.

Did he do anything with a pilot that he couldn't have otherwise done? Other than have some nice things like coffee/camera film he could have just hiked out there or taken a horse.

It's not that simple. A Multi-day excursion to civilization for supplies is a drain on a mountainman existence for a couple reasons. First, you're going to be burning more supplies moving than you would staying at camp, and second, the time you spend in transit is time you can't spend keeping up on camp tasks and collecting supplies, hunting, fishing, gathering, etc.

It doesn't sound like much, but as a hunter/gatherer, you will have no surplus, and so everything you do that eats resources or reduces your ability to gather said resources is potentially dangerous.

My Grandfather overheard one of my uncles talking about recreational viagra use at my grandmother's 80th birthday party (we were all pretty drunk, Grandpa was 4 years older than Grandma), and loudly declared to the whole Legion Post that if he didn't need performance drugs to do his duty, none of his sons should either.

As a 14 year old, I thought I was scarred for life.

Now, I just think it's pretty great that he was still able to enjoy his life that way even as he approached 85 years old.

Yes, 14 year old me was drunk too, it's rural Minnesota, no one cares.

And yes, it took me 5 years to not be grossed out by the mention of Viagra (and only partially because of grandpa, the idea that my uncle was doing it recreationally was just as horrifying).

But whatever. Cool to think that my dick might still work when I'm that age, I'm sure I prefer it to the alternative (and what it says about prostate health is enormous).

Definitely get involved in planting and reclamation (there's a lot of invasive species that need to be cleaned up) but animals innawoods can find their own food and bad for all parties when animals think of people as a place to get food.

Instead of feeding animals, I'd recommend spotting and cataloging some.

Dick kept meticulous records of animal movements and populations around Twin Lakes and gave all of it to the Fish & Wildlife Service when he finally left his cabin.
