Is spearfishing /out/?
Any tips for a beginner?
I was looking at a very simple spear and sling type on Amazon but its only 5 feet long.
Good enough to start?

It's generally done outdoors, so yes

Get yourself a STRAIGHT fibreglass sling spear (many cheaper ones are slightly off) and snorkel and try reefy areas and use restraint. At first, you'll probably want to spear everything you see; but be patient and wait for decent fish that you plan on actually eating. Bring a catch bag or a fish stringer to store fish and make sure you use a dive float if you're in an area with boats or it's required by law where you're spearing.

Where you diving/what you targeting? I dive regularly here in San Diego. Pole spears are great to learn how to stalk fish, but be ready to get skunked and be frustrated a lot at first. Personally I would get at least an 7-9' pole spear unless you're in really shitty vis, and don't be afraid to tighten the bands up to get more zing.

Be sure to read up on your state's fish and game regs and remember fish look ~30% bigger underwater. Learn what is decent eating, don't over harvest and eat everything you shoot. Try to always dive with a buddy, because it IS dangerous, and I'm not talking about sharks. Shallow water blackout kills even experienced guys every year. Breathe up at least twice your dive duration between drops. Don't overweight yourself, always have a knife. Do some research on freediving, learn to equalize and take proper breaths.

It can be pricey to get into, so dive with your cheap stuff to figure out if it seems like something you really wanna get into. All that special gear is worth it. If you decide you wanna go for it get an open cell spearfishing suit 3mm if you're in FL or the Gulf and 5mm if you're in CA, get a low volume mask and freedive fins. All that stuff makes a difference.

Shit's addicting though so watch out.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will be spearfishing down in Mexico for whatever is available in winter.
I am not a strong swimmer so I want to keep free diving to a minimum.
In fact I am hoping to hunt mostly in very shallow water dipping down only a few feet long enough to take a shot once I have spotted prey.
I have a full face mask so I can't even equalize so diving past about 5 feet is not gonna happen.
Does anyone of this sound reasonable?

What you're describing isn't going to get you any fish. You need to be able to do at least 20' drops to get anything half decent. Being a decent swimmer is kind of a prerequisite.

North Pacific side Baja is close to my home territory. The main thing to target there with a polespear is going to be calico bass like the two on the left in the pic above you. They're super wily though for good size ones. You have to drop to the bottom and try to stalk them from behind cover otherwise they'll feel you coming on their lateral line and they'll just book it.

Other than that on a polespear you're stuck with opaleye and perch which are pretty much trash fish. Actually your best bet with your gear and ability is going to be corbina. Go to a sand beach and look for sand crabs, you can see where they are cuz there will be little v's in the sand. Go at high tide and swim in the surf and just outside the breakers. It will be a silver fish that looks kinda like a carp. They have their mouth on the bottom cuz they dig in the sand for the crabs. They're really good eating and people overlook them, they are actually closely related to white sea bass. I don't know how far south they will be though.

On the cortez side you can shoot triggers which are good eating, make sure you have a knife to brain them though cuz they bite. I've seen them up here in the summer in warm years in ~7' of water before. Triggers I think go all the way down to cabo. Other than that I don't really know small reef fish on the east side.

I did that exact trip last year as a raw spearfishing beginner, with a bit of snorkelling experience previously. Had a good time, after the first couple days didn't have much trouble shooting enough to feed myself and the pup. Spent a bunch of the trip getting over colds with plugged sinuses, couldn't equalize properly so couldn't dive more than 20 feet. Still got some good fish.

Advice: buy a real Speargun. Probably like a 100cm or 110. They're not that much more money than a pole and if a big yellowtail swims past at 10-15 ft you're gonna be pissed you didn't spend the extra 100 on a gun.

2: find a copy of The Baja Catch on amazon. They're expensive, but worth its weight in gold down there. Good advice on remote camping and fishing spots.

3: have 2 spare tires and a pump. Lots of good fishing at the end of long shifty washboarded roads.

Good spots for free remote camping and spearing: bahia Asuncion, Playa san rafael, ligui.
Check out Spear America in Irvine on your way to Baja for gear. Good guys , good advice, good prices.

Adding on to what this guy said, if you're getting just one gun then get a 110 or a 120. Also get a floatline before shooting any thing that would be considered a "big" fish, especially a yellowtail. Which you definitely have a chance of seeing. I see them around here swimming in schools in 12 feet of water if I'm lucky. While a polespear is good to learn, a gun is way easier to land fish on.

Damn, 79 bucks for the 1993 edition and 15 bucks for the 1988 edition.
Are guides this old still useful ?

Yes. Absolutely worth it. Some of its a little out of date but the maps showing where reefs and rocks are aren't.
Just sell it when you're done. It'll pay for itself in gas savings because you're not driving to places you can't fish.

Dunno. I had the 1993, never seen the 88. Read the amazon reviews maybe, try to figure out what's different. The 1993 has a chapter on shore fishing the 1988 different, which was moderately useful.

there should be your regular rock denizens. I would target kelp lines, rock points that drop off, rocky coves ect..structure is what you want. dont be afraid to use the kelp canopy as a base. bring a boogie board or a dive board. boogie board might serve more purposes though. a pair of fins is a must. bring a couple lengths. a short pair like makapus and a dive pair to get you out of currents faster. you should be aware that there are currents underwater that funnel through the slots. if youre not a strong swimmer a least bring a snorkel vest. theyre cheap and can save your life. a few weights on your belt help you get down faster. baja is fun I go several times a year but its also a place where you are far away from any help. so safety should be a big concern. a hawaiian sling has limited range and finding targets is work. usually can get fish that are pinned in the rock crevices with them. check all the little pockets of rocks, theres cabezon in there. get some gloves also. I would buy a cheap gun off ebay and your percentages will go up 3 fold. you need a license and be aware of your take. bring a boogie board and a bag, bungie the bag to the board and make a long leash for it. you can use the board to paddle out, attach it to kelp, drop a anchor line from it. and use it as a point of reference for your drifts. dont pry abalone or its jail time for you senor.
