For standard and sportsy outtings, along with /trv/ling, nalgenes are lighter and tougher. For more bushcrafty outings, kanteens can be used to boil water which makes them more versatile, and they're also easily cleaned with things that would damage plastic. Then I eventually discovered the wonderful world of camelbaks and waterbags with filters, and suddenly I wasn't using nalgenes anymore, aside from more relaxed outtings in a group where we end up sharing bottles.
Depends on your use, but ideally get both and adapt.
