A full fridge uses less electric than an empty one. The thermal mass of a full fridge prevents the cold loss an empty fridge has. It has to do with cooling the air you let into the fridge when you open it. So, if the fridge is full you let only a tiny amount of warm air into the fridge when you open it and the large amount of already cold thermal mass quickly chills that air and the fridge runs less. when you don't have anything in the fridge a massive amount of warm air enters when you open it and there's no thermal mass there to help chill it. The fridge then runs a great deal more.

I have tons of soda bottles full of water that I keep in my fridge to fill up all the unused spaces. My fridge barely needs to run at all.

If your surroundings are so bad that you need to refer to a survival pyramid, live on stocked up food, and rely on a barter system with other people, your gold and silver won't be worth fucking shit.

You'd be better to cash in that gold and silver and stock up on more food and water treatment devices. Those will be worth a whole lot more than gold and silver during a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI scenario.

Here's a fun exercise. Go find a tribal society (try the Amazon rainforest). Try to get them to give you anything of value for a gold coin.

Now go find a subsistence farming society. The current purchasing power of an ounce of gold in the US, even after the dive, is equivalent to several hundred pounds of grain, or maybe a small tractor. Try to get one of those farmers to give you that in exchange. You might eventually talk him into giving you something for it, but it won't be anywhere near the value you think it is.

I've never really understood the theory behind this?

Seems to me, if the situation is so bad that the currency is no longer of value, then
we'll be in a barter society where gold and silver coins will also be of no value.

Far better to use your prepper money (gold is currently around $1400 per ounce)
on easily _tradable_ items, like; ammo, AA batteries, toilet paper, Bic lighters, etc.

Because if the SHTF, I ain't trading you a can of soup for any amount of Krugerrands.

He was pointing out that gold & silver were at the top of the pyramid. In a pyramid diagram, the things at the top are the least important. That's why they are the smallest portion of the pyramid. He was responding to the post that seemed to be under the misimpression that food and water should be at the top, rather than near the bottom, of the pyramid. Because, in a pyramid diagram, things at the top are the least concern.

Gold and silver are at the top because they are the thing you should be concerned only after you have completely resolved all other concerns. Because you don't know how to read a diagram, what you are commenting as a criticism of the diagram is actually the exact same thing that the diagram is informing you of.
