Think of it as IC short, Mod medium, Full long range.
You are looking for your effective distance where you have a big pattern, but yet you are still hitting your intended target (bird, rabbit, squirrel, whatever) with several pellets for a quick clean kill. Once your pattern spreads to a point that you might only hit with a single BB or two, or perhaps even miss even though you shot a good shot, you are just hoping to get lucky.
I really recommend anyone new to shotgunning, to shoot several shells into paper or a cardboard box at a few distances, they think they might be shooting at game, just to learn what is happening down range to their pattern.
