I know how it feels to be a boy from the deep south in extreme cold. The most important things to remember are a good base layer and plentiful other layers. On the very bottom, since I have a semi-loose wool union suit (LL Bean) instead of thermals, i wear a pair of athletic boxer-briefs and athletic t-shirt. For extreme cold, I'll have a pair of old army thermals on over that, y'know the big baggy brown ones. My socks are also layered --which is something to keep in mind when buying boots-- and I wear a pair of Gander Mountain hiking socks and over them a really big pair of Wigwam socks, both wool and synth blends. For pants, go for something synthetic. I wear a pair of pants I picked up from Academy by Magellan, they were cheap and have served me well. They dry in a snap and hold out the wind. Paired with the two layers of long johns, it's like wearing snow pants. For boots, you have a plethora of options. There are all sorts of insulated mucks, work boots, hikers, even cowboy boots if that's your style, but it's hard to go wrong with surplus winter boots. I have a pair of German surplus winter boots that serve me well, but American gore-tex is just as good. For a coat, something with a hood is great. I usually go for work coats like Carhart and Berne. Wear a hat too, even a wool beanie can make a huge difference.
