Best reel I can get for less than 100$?
Should I be aiming for reels w/o any plastic hardware?

I just want something that will last for a while, it doesnt need to be any good besides that. Websites with reviews seem to say there are tons of options, maybe that's true and I should just pick one of the popular models but I dont trust the reviews

I was gonna say Lew's has a handful for <$100 and they seem decent. But I really like how the Abus feel while palming them and even that $60 SilverMax hasn't given me any issues in the two years I've had it.

It's worth checking out the Bass Pro reels too. I reccommend playing around with a couple different ones in a store and see what feels good.
Or search around and see if you can find a Revo S for ~$100 and buy it.

I've bought some nice Abus in flea markets for $10-$20 and fixed them up. Usually $10 in parts will do it. My current reel is a Ambassidor 5000 that I got for $10 and fixed it with a $3 part. As long as they aren't rusted or corroded to shit youd be ok.

I'm sure it's like everywhere else and you could get checked at a popular spot. But you could still buy a daily or 5-day oe whatever they have and it will be reasonable. Chances of getting checked at most spots are probably slim but the consequences of getting caught without the license are rough.

You like medium rods for that? I tend to like really fast rods for that stuff because with the braid I can feel exactly what the bait is doing. And then medium action rods feel good for spinners and stuff where you can rip them around and they end up with a more smooth and natural look.

But it's the same thing I always say about rods- so much is preference. I would just end up reccommending a fast actuon medium weight rod like that Vendetta since it is fast enough to give decent little twitches but slow enough to feel good ripping other hardbaits across the lake.

I do a lot of my rod and reel fishing in rivers that hold trout and shoal bass. The medium helps work the fish closer to me and keeps the trout from shaking the hook. the sensitivity is okay for jigs and shallow cranks in the 1/8-1/32 range and they toss real nice on 6lb mono

And what is a screw? Its basically a nail with a slot and threads.
A rod and a pole both do the sAme job. A nail and a screw both do the sAme job- rods and poles both help you catch fish, nails and screws both hold wood together. A rod can be used just to dip a bait in the water with no use of the reel, and a screw can be smacked in to a piece of wood with a hammer, but that doesn't make the screw a nail or the rod a pole.

You gotta scope out little lakes and ponds in commercial, industrial, and residential areas that aren't overfished. They are normally smaller where it is easy to fish from shore plus they keep the grass cut so you aren't walking through tall ass shrubs.

I see no good reason to fuss with a screw or plug.

And I don't care if the hole lets sand and stuff into the reel - the point of this reel is that it's a tank and easy as hell to disassemble and clean. Plus the hole itself will let me dunk it to rinse debris out without really worrying. If it ends up rusting which it won't if I take care of it who cares it was 40$ on eBay lol

Different buzzbaits run at different speeds too. Get one with a fat blade and run it on braid and you can go pretty slow. But between the speed and the shape of buzzbaits, you do end up with a lot of near misses.

You could do that on a M with Fast or even X-Fast action for sure. Or a MH with Med-Fast action and that will have a similar feeling at the tip as the faster M but will have a bit more backbone if you land something heavy.

You better get a 300yd spool of 20lb braid for that 4500 because that fucker will hold a ton of line. Might even take more because lots of those saltwater spinning reels have deep spools and hold a lot of line.

Bass will hit bare hooks on inlines too. Almost any predatory fish will hit basically the same lures but different sizes and some prefer different colors but a natural gold will always work.

You can remove extra hooks or even replace them with single hooks. If you replace the treble hooks with weedless hooks, they should never hook the fish outside the mouth and will hook your nets far less. You may need some split rings, if the lures don't already have them. In that case, cut off the eye of the original hook and replace it with a split ring.

Rubber nets don't last very long. They dry rot and crack. I've had a couple. When I buy or make something, I want it to last several lifetimes when it is taken care of properly.

A Brooke of that size would have grown out of those colors by now plus anything caught this time of year would probably still have wicked spawning colors

Though different strains of browns look different at different ages

Courtlands are pretty plain and average

Seefs grow stupid fast but don't have the best colors

Plus there can always be differences within the species depending on hatchery vs native fish
Plus where shit lived also can change its coloration slot

Plus some hatcheries feed their fish certain feed which can improve coloration etc ( though ive only ever seen it used on larger fish )

As for where to find them cheaper, Idrk, It looks like the older models go for around $20-$25 so maybe you could look into that, If it were me Id pay the extra $5 to not have that faggy light blue colored spool though.

I like to have a handful of rods with different stuff tied on with me so I don't always have to untie and retie

Plus I often fish 2 rods at once in 2 holes side by side with different offerings to find out what's wanted

Also going to have some of the rods on homemade jawjackers when I feel like fishing for walleye or bass

I still want to grab another one of those Okumas some day. Might just get a 35 or if they go on sale again, grab like a 10, another 25, and a 35 because I like them so much. And that 25 is the perfect size for 10lb-15lb braid and going for anything from panfish to larger bass. The reels are just butter smooth and they look good as well. I definitely prefer that to the Sienna.

And even cheaper reels will normally last bretty gud as long as they come from a good company and aren't plastic. I would be more concerned about the $500 reel with all the carbon fiber parts not lasting as long as the $60 President. But if you buy a $1000 solid metal conventional reel, that fucker should last a long time.

Only once in the past 50 years has it been cold enough for long enough to allow people onto the local lake. The ice was 9 inches thick. People were driving 4-wheelers around on it and shit. It was making making creaking and cracking sounds the entire time, but never broke.

Most of the winters it may get -40F but a few days later it'll be in the 40F-50F range. Normally the thickest ice is 3-4 inches because of such fluctuations.

Beginner question,

How the fuck do you guys fish freshwater lakes that are riddled with nothing but weeds/logs? There's this lake I've been hitting up, going to go there this morning as well.

The fish bite there, however, the biggest pain in the ass is fishing through the weeds and logs that are fucking everywhere.

Even with a typical weedless set-up on a lizard/worm, I drag a plethora of fucking shit that I have to scrape off the bait. It's not a big deal but jesus it's annoying doing it every time I throw it out. When I reel a fish in, it's almost entirely covered in shit.

Not only that but if I ever want to wacky rig something I get caught up on sticks/logs, so that's out of the question for me. Which is a shame because that's what I get the most fish on.

TL;DR: Any way easy way to avoid hook getting snagged on logs?

Eh you are kinda limited in lure choices if you can't find any clear spots unfortunately. Braid helps in those lakes because you can still drag fish and lures out of the weeds. I like to cast Texas rigs out past the weeds, retrieve them slowly right to the edge of the weeds, and then just rip it across the top of the weeds so I don't get caught up. Those Storm and Tsunami swimbaits with the single hook on the top work bretty gud in those spots too, they don't hang up much.

When you're fishing around logs be gentle when you feel the lure bumping into them. i think it helps a lot with snags if you aren't slamming the lure into the logs lol.

For fishing over grass I like weightless senkos, chatter baits, lipless cranks, and top water.

I find that chumming with bread balls works really well. Doubly so if the area is a tourism spot where people toss bread to them.

In Ohio there's the spillway at Pymatuning Reservoir on the Ohio/Pennsylvanian boarder.

They are definitely good eating but usually we try and get a few walleye for eating and release all the Pike since usually all the places you Pike fish up there have tons of big (better eating and easier to clean) walleye. My favorite Pike attacks are when you arnt even trying to catch one and you have a few feet of line out and your just running your lure back in forth by the side of the boat when your changing locations and one will come up and slam it right there 2 feet away from you. This is the standard method for reeling in for me. I'll do a figure eight in the water for about 30 seconds. It has resulted in many strikes and catches.

so i caught my first carp today, but i'm not sure if i did it legally. went out lookin for bass but the swamp i usually fish was frozen over completely. Hiked down farther and found this stream type area and saw a school of like 12 big carp moving around beneath the surface. didnt have any sort of carp bait with me so i just tied on a treble hook and threw it at them. to my suprise i managed to snag a 20 something pounder. and then another, and another.
was crazy fun fighting them and pulling them in but i feel kind of bad about it in retrospect. hook tore a big scale off a few of them and one was bleeding a bit. not sure how fragile carp are. i think they are an invasive species here, my state is open season no limit year round, but i dont like killing a fish if i'm not going to eat it.
should i feel bad bros? didnt really think about it at the time, just wanted to catch a fish.

I don't know what the law is, but I guess they introduced the grass carp as vegetation control and they are non-native but not considered invaisive around here.
