So just finished watching this show and i found it quite entertaining and Ed was a pretty cool guy to watch compared to Grylls whos show is nothing more then him eating disgusting shit for the viewers pleasure just like in Jackass.

Have you guys watched it? What is your opinion?

He failed at hunting, that is for sure.

Only managed to kill a goat when it had trapped itself in a tree.

Took forever for him to get a fire going.
Took a long time to effectively collect rain water.
Never tried spear fishing
Never made a trap for the goats
Never built pic related.
Built a crappy bow instead of a simple spear.
Took forever for him to scavenge for a piece of metal for a knife.

Kind of disappointing really.

All of that was what made the show so charming.

I've seen enough survival shows where the host does eveything right, 100% efficient. I didn't need to watch another one.

I thought is was very good. I liked how it was more realistic than other survival programs.

I'm sure he could have lived easily for another 2 months if he had the setup he did at the end.

He said he'd only been camping by himself for 3 days before, so that's something to take into effect.

Watched it the other week... Liked it. Sure folk will bitch that he failed at stuff, but that's what it's all about - That shit aint easy and the show was honest about it.

I watched it yesterday, thought it was amazing.

He built a useless raft, it took him two weeks to make a fire, he got really lucky with the goat, etc.

One part that was pretty disappointing was that he still kind of received help from humans because of all the metal scraps, sandals, rope, and bottles he scavenged.

Also, they scouted out a really good island beforehand. Pretty sure they already knew there was a cave and enough food on that island.

I wouldn't say disappointing (more 'interesting) but yeah it was strange how much bits and bobs he found here and there... The bottles and tub in particular were such a boon for collecting his water, that would have been such a problem if not for those finds.

I was, however, mildly disappointed that he needed medical assistance. Not that i can blame him or anything like that, no one wants to die for a TV program. It's just a bit saddening to know that if it happened to me there's a fair chance I'd just get some bug and die due to the viscous cycle of illness hurting your ability to eat/drink, which worsens your illness, repeat ad infinitum.

Really liked it. I felt like I was along for the ride with him.

he (and the crew, who are all ex-military) know exactly what they are doing, and what they are doing is making bank. plenty enough reality on other shows for those that want it.

I think most of us know that. It will still never change the fact that he operates his sensationalism under the guise of survival advice. Much of his advice is really very terrible and wrong. Sure most of us know he's presenting it that way basically to justify his stunts, many of which are also fake. I don't like his show.
I'm sure he could survive quite well in the wild, I'm sure he has some credentials and I ain't saying he's not courageous but he is most definitely a sham artist that gives bad advice.

I think one of the points of the show is that some people romanticize the thought of being a castaway. And this show is trying to take that down a notch, showing that it is far from fun and games, adventure and thrill to be isolated on an foreign and relatively small island. Even for people with military and other experiences in the bag.

Its really neat how he managed to find two different flip flops that fit him perfectly. And that spoon he used in the third episode. And all those water bottles. And that straw. And that rope. And that long sleeve shirt. And those tin cans he used for boiling. And that toothbrush. And that rugby ball he used as a pillow. It's even neater that the goat tangled itself so securely in that vine. Definitely a very realistic depiction of a real world survival situation on a remote deserted island.

He eats only raw foods, drinks only unsterilized water, stands in direct view of the sun all day and gets sick multiple times. All of this while having the safety net of a satellite phone, GPS locator, and med-kit. I cringed when he jumped off that rock in ep. 1 @ 19:16. Who the fuck would willingly risk that?

He's a great dude, but the show (from an educational standpoint considering he's an 'expert') sucked complete ass. HE TOOK 13 ENTIRE FUCKING DAYS TO FINALLY DECIDE TO START A FIRE. They should have named it "The Depressed and Lonely Scavenger".

Oh and the best verbatim quote from the entire miniseries? “No one’s ever survived sixty days on a desert island without any tools or clothing.”

It was convenient finding all that stuff, then again he's only a 40 minute helicopter flight away frow civilisation so i'd expect to find that much shit lying around.
Don't know about goats, but sheep are always getting themselves stuck in thickets and stay suck until they panic, tearing themselves loose.
Most of the trouble he had with fire was crappy cordage for his fire bow and not having the right wood for the hearth.
I wouldn't have eaten that sea dildo for anything. are they poisonous, it looked it. I'd eat the fish, not the little loaches raw but not the shellfish or anything else on the island.

He mentions it coming out, it was just a denture. Not an actual tooth. It comes out when he is eating the mango's.

Also get the feeling I've seen another that was the same, but can't remember who it was.

I think it'd be like that pretty much anywhere on the planet though - junk out there just floats and floats until it gets washed up.

What I didn't understand is why he didn't just combine the palm leaf woven shelter with the cave, it would provide shelter from weather, wind and isolation from 4 sides. Instead he decided to live under one angled roof.
