Is /out/ pro conservation?
I'm more conservative leaning politically, but my biggest issue with American conservatives is that they're more than happy to see the planet destroyed by greed.

Myself personally, I'm a right wing goose stepping /pol/ack. Keep in mind there's a bit of a political shift going on right now with Trump's election. The way that it seems you perceive "conservative" coaligns with the old cuckservatives. Trump is not one of these people, he's bringing in a new wave of political ideologies that don't align with the old cuckservative platform. Why do you think they tried so hard to keep him from getting elected?

I am in favor of active conservation. Leaving areas untouched isn't necessarily helping to preserve the landscape.

eg. forest fires wouldn't be having such a devastating effect if selective logging was allowed to reduce the density of the trees

I don't think democrats have been the best advocates for conservation at all, they clearly have moneyed interests that prevent them from really fighting for the environment, but at least their party isn't riddled with climate change deniers. I've never heard Trump talk about conservation or the environment - and I have looked. He has talked about cutting what he deems to be nonessential government funding, and I worry that this will affect national parks, and funding for restoration projects. I think in Trump's administration, conservation areas will be seen as potential oil drilling locations.

The main reason forest fires were devastating was because of years of overaggressive firefighting led to the build up of too much fuel. Now (at least in the US) we just try to contain fires to places where it won't endanger human settlements.

If you want to preserve a natural landscape it needs to have its natural disturbances and be protected from unnatural ones (e.g. logging). There are ways we can log a forest sustainably, but it's a stretch to call any logging operation conservation.

I would say the overarching problem is that in most countries economic growth is given far more importance than environmental and social issues which leads to large amounts of unsustainable development. This isn't really a conservative/liberal problem, but embedded in the way we've structured modern civilizations.

We have made some improvements though through environmental standards and regulation.

What I would advise anyone is to actually talk to geologists and engineers involved in the operations you think are problematic. It really cleared up alot of my misconceptions about conservatives having the environment. Tbh conservatives should really co-opt conservation as part of their marketing. Actually scratch that. Conservatives really need to work on marketing in general. There's been some strides thanks to Internet and professional memers but their usual attempts are just pathetic. Leftists usually have media and media savvy and narcissists on their side which makes for amazing image, optics and marketing. Take Vox for example. Excellent design and image management even if it's just drivel.

Anyway. Yeah drilling isn't always bad. Even fracking isn't depending on location. The energy industry has a fuck ton of money and researchers. They genuinely do know what they're doing.

This might sound stereotypical but foreigners outside of Europe don't really have any concept of conservation. Big example would be China, or India. Or any African country.

Conservation is a luxury of a wealthy society

Someone genuinely knows what they are doing. But the energy companies are also primarily focused on making money and not environmental conservation. They just work to meet environmental regulations and as we have seen in the past, many of those energy companies support entities that fight for looser regulations.

This why countries need strong and competent environmental protection agencies which can set regulatory emissions limits and monitor compliance.

The idea of Scott Pruitt being the head of the USEPA is legitimately scary because he has previously fought the USEPA to loosen restrictions on coal-burning power plants. He also supports moving the regulatory power of the USEPA from federal to state level. This allows industries much more power and allows them to pit states against each other in a race to the bottom.

Something I'd keep in mind just as food for thought is that corps will be in it for money but they aren't stupid. They live on earth too. They have family in towns. Hell even logging is almost always sustainable. There's more trees now than ever.(you stagger tree growth for steady lumber supply, you don't just move on to a new forest)

Really I can understand your worry but as someone who's worked with and given lots of briefings on the EPA and thus lots of research, you have no idea how glad I will be that those power thirsty Dumbfucks at the EPA will fuck off.

Could you flesh out why/what the USEPA has done that has made you so upset with them seeing as you've already prepared briefings.

A power plant is not going to invest to improve their emissions unless they have federal regulation. An industrial company will not spend a dime more than they have to to meet their regulations.

The whole system is based on the regulating body doing research to determine what emissions will have an impact so that they can set reasonable limits that balance environmental damage with economic reality.

For a lot of companies, the guy making the decision to buy that nice treatment technology to improve emissions isn't living near the industrial park. Self-regulation hasn't worked for problems like environmental protection. If you know of an example where it has, then show me.

Conservation isn't really the right word; it implies that the only way to look after /out/doors is to conserve, when in reality quite often the best way to deal with things may be the exact opposite.

For example, in Aus we shoot kangaroos when they have a population explosion; it balances the food chain and ensures better health throughout the general population. But culling doesn't exactly sound like 'conserving'.

I think a much more apt term is 'stewardship'; thoughtful and selective actions taken with the aim of doing what is necessary to help nature balance itself.
