Moisture venting is achieved through the open design, what you're suggesting is something like a goretex or eVent poncho which is just retarded.
I like poncho for wet weather EXCEPT alpine hiking (steep terrain and exposure to blustery winds) and <40F weather.
I like not having to wear a jacket and salopettes, or carry a separate rucksack cover.
I like being able to rig it up as a tarp, wind break, temporary shelter, etc
And I love that it fits inside my cargo pocket so I can carry it much easier than a jacket.
Arms get wet? Tuck em in
Legs get wet? wear gaiters, I've never had wet upper legs with a poncho.
A poncho doesn't REPLACE a waterproof shell in EVERY situation, but it does a damn good passable job for the most part.
