Why is the only public land in Nevada? I live East of the Mississippi and I don't have any options for camping except at overpopulated camp grounds

Goes back to the Civil War. Our silver was needed to help fund the Union war efforts. In order to be accepted, Nevada had to give almost all of the land to the government.

This is also the reason behind the Bundy stuff that happened awhile back.

You realize, unless it's posted somewhere, you can pretty much camp wherever in a National Forest/Grassland or in BLM areas. They usually only ask that your a little bit a ways from the road or trail, you pick up after yourself, and to use already established camp sites if possible.

Take my state for example, Pennsylvania. Looking at a map of federal land, there's only 1 national forest. There are however 1.5 million acres of state game lands for hunting, and 2.2 million acres of state forests.

No camping is allowed in game lands, but you can dispersed camp anywhere in a state forest.

Check your state for state owned lands. You might be surprised.

You are allowed to dispersed camp on US Forest Service land, and you're probably allowed to camp on land owned by your state as well. Just do your research and follow the rules.
