Water's warming up, the tides are calming down and I'm excited as fuck because soon, I'll be back killing innocent little fish! Any divers out there?

I just bought myself a beginner wetsuit (started spearfishing last year, but didn't bother buying one, since I'm a dirt poor college student), went for a Tribord 5mm SUBEA. I know it's one-piece, but tbh for the price it was I can't really complain. Besides, I got good mobility in it, at least when I tried it dry. Don't know how it'll perform wet. How is your suit maintenance routine? I've been told to rinse it with abundant freshwater after use, is this enough?

Also, my mask has gotten a bit of mold (I think?) during the winter, I must've fucked up because that sure as hell wasn't supposed to happen. How do you prevent this? How can I remove the mold without fucking up the mask itself?

Fuck yeah!

A wetsuit will fit much better when you have a layer of water between you and the suit than on dry land, so don't worry about that.

Also, I just wash my wetsuit while showering and keep it far as fuck away from direct sunlight, as I plan on keeping it for 20 years.

Hell, I even put my wetsuit on up to my waist at home, drive for 15 minutes to the ocean, and then have it on until I'm home again in the shower. Mainly because it's nipple twisting cold to stand in 10°C or lower winds on the beach, trying to squeeze in to a gimpsuit. Not sure if you have those issues in the Azores, though.

I'm a windsurfer so I'm clueless about the goggles, unfortunately. I'd love to dive, but the waters around these parts are quite... uninspiring.

I reaaally wish I lived by water. I've always wanted to get into free diving and spear fishing. I spent a couple weeks practicing apnea a while ago and was able to break four minutes which was pretty cool. That was just sitting on a couch and not moving at all though. I probably would be terrible actually in the water.

NAUI certified advanced + tech/wreck + occasional spearfishing here.
Haven't been in like 2 years though. I'm definitely doing a few beach dives soon, and hopefully get back into it all.

Waiting for the water to warm up a little, went out a couple weeks and shot 15+ Sheepshead and a 2 Pomps. Just wish our water here was clearer. 10' Vis on a good day...

We haven't got sheepsheads around here but we do have pomps (I think), aren't they silvery fellows who give swim fast as shit (and give a hell of fight, especially for their size)? I've gotten to shoot a few, and they're speedy bastards. Never did land a kill.

No I live in NYC but have been snorkeling in alot of places. Hawaii, Bermuda, Cancun, US/UK virgin Islands, bahamas, barbados, Grand/little cayman island to name a few. Im fairly young (I think) which may explain my lack of SCUBA certifications.. but I hope to get it soon.

Just to let you know, almost everywhere there are things worth seeing. Unless they've literally fished everything out, there are probably good spots that are interesting.

One of my favorite spots when I was in Florida was off Howard park in Tarpon Springs. Few people would point to it as a "destination" but I enjoyed snorkeling there anyway.

One of the worst things is that a lot of people neglect temperate waters - they think all the good diving and snorkeling is in the tropics. Not true.

I can testify for that. I've dived in a few spots in the tropicos (Cabo Verde, Brazil), and even though they had beautiful oceans, brimming with variety and colours, I honestly wouldn't trade my homeland's for them.

Any suggestions off of US northern Atlantic coast? Visibility seems kind of poor. I like to swim in the open water but I can't really see further than like 10 feet it seems.

Yeah, it looks like you're not going to find great vis, so I guess get used to 10 ft? I checked youtube and there are people who go off long island, even from the shore, but the vis is... pretty bad. People go off every state in New England, just try searching your area + spearfishing, freediving, diving, whatever.

A lot of people still seem to do it, google is your friend. There seem to be a fair number of spearfishers, you can always snorkel on your own (honestly, the gear is basically spearfishing gear minus the spear anyways), and there are scuba people everywhere.

Your best bet is probably to get in touch with some group out there.

I've been a long time scuba diver, but I came to realize that I don't like it that much. It's so complex, there's so much gear, it's so expensive... I like simplicity, I like having minimum gear, I hate being too dependant upon it, and of course, the less expensive the better, and freediving seems like an ideal alternative.

I think it's time I do it, I'll see where I can practice apnea at a local pool.
