Hey /out/.

Im looking to get some hiking shoes/boots for general innawoods and possibly backpacking down the road when i aqcuire more stuff and energy.

Is there anything in particular that i need to avoid when buying hiking shoes? Personally, i'd just like a pair that isnt my every day shoes and is waterproof. I get a pretty sizable discount from my dad's employer, so i was looking to buy a $120-$150 shoe at about half the cost. I know with keyboards and headphones this can mean spending money on shit that doesnt matter. Is that the same situation here?

also, reccomended brands?

I'm a fan of Keens, but they fit weird on some people so definitely try before you buy. I have a pair of Ontario Lace for my walkin' around town shoes, and a pair of Glarus for hiking.

Bergaus are great. Unbeleviably lightwieght, water-proof and comfortable. can get them fairly cheap.

I'm on my second pair of Meindl, I used the first pair for 5 seasons but wore them out last year. Easily the best boots I have owned, and the most comfy ones I have tried on.
Dunno how widely known the brand is, but here in scandinavia you can find them everywhere.

Well that sucks. I had a pair of Merrell Moabs and they were absolute garbage. Wasn't expecting water proof but even with their gore-tex liner, they were useless in the rain.

The toe/sole also started peeling off after a few months.

I made the mistake because I didn't realize how stupid synthetics are for shoes.

Go for as much leather as you can.

I brought back my Moabs and got a pair of Keens. MUCH happier.

I've been wearing my Wolverine Spencers for going on two and a half years for everything from every day wear to hiking innawoods. They're seriously some of the best boots I've ever owned.

They take a little while to break in, and are slightly heavy, but seriously I can't recommend them enough!!

They'll run you around $100

Yea I can back that up, they were my first hiking boots and were pretty good all around. They only lasted me a year and a half, but that was from daily wear and a summer working as a semitruck sander so I bet all the grit is what wore them through.

Here's my current pair, been two years now and still going strong with daily wear. They're quite light as far as boots go, and comfortable enough that you can wear them all day. Almost never get wet socks when wearing them, even through snow or puddles. If I remember right they were around $100.

If I remember correctly, those were my first real pair of boots, too. I wore the hell out of 'em, until the soles were so bad they hurt my knees at work. Good boots for the price point.

OP, I own a very worn out pair of the Moab low waterproofs. They have been good work shoes (really comfortable), but not great to hike in. Part of this comes down to their wear and part to the way they fit me. But even when new the gore-tex made my feet wet from the inside, and kept my shoes stinky and slow to dry. If you use them for any real rugged travel, they will eventually fail. A couple things to remember:

>No practical footwear is 100% waterproof. Muckboots or Wellingtons are the exception, but you don't want to wear them everyday. If you want something really resistent to water, get a full leather upper that's been waterproof treated.
>I'm increasingly erring on the side of going lightweight/ultralight. Part of this for me is just accepting that I will be hiking in wet shoes sometimes. Trick is always to keep a pair of (merino wool) socks dry or drying on your pack, and change out when necessary (I like to do this at night and sleep in my dry socks, then hike with them in the morning). A few sheets of newspaper will help dry your boots out. You probably know this, but never dry them by a fire.

The biggest thing to take into consideration when you buy boots is how they fit your foot. Get a good fit, with a little bit of room in the toes. My Merrells fit me just fine at work, but after 2 days of slamming 210 pounds down the trail, my feet spread and swelled to where my toes felt like they were going to bust out of the front. Conversely, a pair of Asolo boots I have that are almost a size too big fit great after a long day of hiking.

tl;dr Buy boots that fit really well. If I were you I would either go for a full leather waterproof upper, or I would go with a well-ventilated, quick-drying hiking shoe or trail runner.

sorry to hear about ur moabs man, i have a pair and love them, never had a problem rain or shine, had them since Christmas without a single issue. but mine are also the "water-proof" model not the goretex.

I'd try a pair on and see what you think, me and 2 of my brothers own the waterproof models and have never had a problem.
I feel that >>93468 may have had a faulty pair. one of my co-workers wanted to see how well the shoes stood up against water, and i let him spray them with a power washer for several minutes (while they were on me of course) and he couldn't believe my feet were still dry.

I guess if you don't look after them the fire might be bad.
I keep the grease up to mine and have never had the leather wear out before the sole does.
