I'm a fan of those crkt wood hawks. Bought the kangee on a whim before a camping trip, ended up liking it a lot. It's pretty solid, with a good amount of heft to get some momentum behind it, and to top it off it was inexpensive. I liked it enough to buy the chogan when i saw it on sale. My biggest gripe with them is they really jam the head on there, to the point were there's shavings bulging out from under the head. Worse yet, the handle is coated with some thick lacquer, which I find unpleasant to grip after you've been working with it for a while.

After a bit of stropping I was able to shave my arm with it too

why would you put a long handle on a hammer with a head area smaller than a sledge? what is that even for?

far right is runner up for actually being useful, and blade shape looks like it will cut flesh about as well as wood.

i still wouldn't wanna swing any of these all day (or have to hike them anywhere!) with those full metal tangs.

How you spend your money is your own business and I've got no judgement regarding it. . If I had 1k+ to blow, I'd probably commission a custom knife for a third of that price. But that obviously isn't a breaching tool or a hammer, and this is a 'hawk' thread.

I do wonder a little bit why the axes/hatches/hawks command high prices. I assume it's the metal? something else?

Hype plays a large part but some of these are 10mm thick so the metal isn't cheap either.

I like the Rifleman, Frontier, and Norse Hawks from Cold Steel.

Tactical Tomahawks are interesting from a design perspective and usually nice to look at but I'd never buy one.

I have a trail hawk. I've modded mine in the way you usually see by stripping off the shitty coating, fitting the head to the handle properly, and sharpening the blade.

All in all a decent chopper for light wood work, and the hammer pull is a nice feature.

If I had to guess the rifleman hawk is going to be a heavier duty wood chopper simply due to the extra heft, and shape of the head itself.

The edge is too short for my preference. It seems like more of a fighting tomahawk than a woodcraft one.
A good woodcraft axe needs to be not only good for chopping, but carving and stock removal too.

I feel like the TrailHawk would pair really well with the Trailmaster though.

I have two: RMJ forge loggerhead and a CRKT Chogan.

The RMJ is very nice but I almost hate to use it. I have abused the hogan and it works pretty good for the price. But the balance is off where the more costly RMJ is balanced very well......
