How heavy is too heavy? How much money is too much? I love the look and culture behind this pack but it is weighing in at 7lbs for 40L. Is this too much /out/? Am I stupid for buying this?

Its not worth it if you care about practicality, but the novelty and aesthetic is nice
I have both a modern pack and a canvas one I made, and I often choose the canvas just because its interesting.

I just don't get it. I mean , I see these hipster hikers on Instagram and other places. They're base load is like 50 pounds. I mean, great you're baking fucking cornbread in the wilderness but if I had to guess they hiked about 10 minutes to get there because their pack weighs more than a small child.

This is one I'm making myself. It has some final work to do still Its the first time I sewed anything since grade 8 home ec class. Its a really shitty fabric and my machine is broken so it doesn't feed the fabric which made things difficult. I have yet to see how it works but even if it falls apart, it only cost me a few bucks and some time.

I have years of experience in leather work so I think the next one will have a lot more leather that will make up for the shit sewing.

I'very got one of Fjällravens Ovik bags. Seems to be a nice middle ground between more modern packs and these out timey ones. I only use it as a day pack though. Suppose it would do fine for a more minimalist camp though.

But, they just are inferior to a modern hiking pack.

If you're just going out for a 1 mile hike, whatever who cares then.

But if you're going for a serious hike, or multiple days outside, you're carrying an extra several lbs that are completely unnecessary. You're also forgetting they have no real suspension system other than some steps over your shoulders, they don't transfer the weight to your hips, as a good pack should.

If you want one to carry around town, and throw your laptop in, and sometimes use it on a short hike, go for it.

If you want a real hiking pack, get something else.

Tbh there's no reason why you can't have one of each.

Ay boys.
I am going to India next month. I am planning on going with my Fjallraven Greenland backpack. It is about 20 litres I think which should be enough as I travel ultra light. However, are there any DIY upgrades like sewing extra straps on or something that I could step my game up so I can tie things to it or something?

That backpack kinda sucks.

I mean I know it probably looks "cool" to you (I think it's hideous), but it has no frame, no hip belt, no... anything. It's literally a purse with 2 tiny straps that you can use to carry that purse on your shoulders.

If you're just using it to carry a few things, and don't plan on wearing it for more than 20 minutes at a time, sure go for it.

If you're using it to carry 15-20 lbs of stuff, and plan on walking any distance, it'll suck. You may think it doesn't suck so bad, but that's only because you've never used a proper backpack.

Go ahead and use it, your mind is already made up. Just fyi, it does suck.
