So, camping season is coming.
Thinking of getting an ENO for backpacking and ditching the tent this year. It would be for weather maybe as cold as 40 degrees at night, not likely much colder.
Any advice?
Accessories that are needed/recommended?
I'm 6'2", 250 pounds.

I've had mine for a few seasons, it still is in one peice. I've used it in all weather conditions.
and yes the only problem with ENO is the you do have to buy everything separately.
Like i said, I have the single nest hammock, along with the Atlas straps ($30ish) and the mosquito net($20 when i bought it).
None of them have gathered any holes yet, and the still look amazing.

I can't say anything about the ENO but just for hammocks in general they pack down very small. My Grand Trunk with an integrated mosquito net and all the cordage packs down to roughly softball-size.

Pic related, it's number 4. Keep in mind that it gets much smaller once you pack it in.

Make sure to have a bag that's rated lower than the temperature outside, you'll freeze your ass off. Maybe even have a pad.

When you're sleeping, do it diagonally across the hammock. You'll be a lot more comfortable.

Made my own hammock from ripstop nylon that I got for $0.75/yard at Walmart.

No real difference except you can customize how big you want it to be. I'm a 5'7" manlet so I was able to make the hammock shorter. Although the suspension system will likely be different because you'll use whipping on the gathered ends.

If you want to learn a lot about hammock camping you should watch Shug Emery's videos on YouTube. In addition to being entertaining he is very knowledgeable.

What is this for? Camping or survival behind enemy lines? Why bring a hammock when you could bring other more useful equipment like a simple canvas to make a shelter with? That backpack looks really small so even if you were behind enemy lines or whatever you'd have no room for food. That pistol is just dead weight unless you plan on executing North Vietnamese officers at point blank range.

The hammock itself has everything you need, you may want to buy some rope too though. That's all ya need. I fucking love them. Best camping buy ever. Quick 5 minute shelter if you add some tarps and you're protected from everything no problem. Haven't used a tent in two years and I spend 3/4 of the year camping.

Get a doublenest, it's worth the extra ten bucks. Don't buy Slap Straps or Atlas Straps, just get some tubular webbing and learn a few knots. Buy different carabiners, the ones it comes with are really bulky.

and yes I'm fat but probably not as fat as you imagine I am. I trail run a few miles every chance I get. Once I got down to 200 pounds (when I was running 4 miles a day in college) and my ribs all stuck out real bad and everyone thought I had cancer or aids. Plus, I'd brush against something with my ribs and it would hurt. The body mass index charts seem to think I should weigh 172 pounds, LOL. I probalby should weigh about 215. I'll work on it.

It looks like they ran cord through the end. Did they also run it down the sides? Like is there anything in the yellow part of the OP? Is it just a rectangle of nylon with the ends bunched up?

I'm exactly your size, and my ENO double nester has been great for like 8 years. I would get the best straps you can, I've had loops break off of the regular slap straps and that shit would have killed me if I had hung up somewhere more dangerous (which I like to do)

also a rain fly would be essential if you are camping. a good sleeping bad is nice, because hammocks get pretty cold due to wind chill.

my double nester is VERY wide across in the middle. I can law across the whole hammock comfortably, with little spillage. I'm 6'2 250lb and I wouldn't be able to comfortable sit with a girl in a single nester. although I'd be able to sleep in one okay.

the strips are, as far as I can tell, for decoration. I think the seam that holds the strip onto the main body is probably important and strengthening the edges, where you're legs hang down, ect. this area puts a lot of stress on that seam, but its solid as shit.

double nester adds more comfortable options, regardless of your size

There is a very sturdy seam holding the different colored trim pieces on. we're talking like three rows of double stitches. the very edge of the trim piece has a weaker seam, but its designed in a way that the thick main seam takes all the tension, and the real edge is loose, probably slightly longer.

I've had their straps break though, it was scary, and could be potentially lethal.
It was their regular cheapo slap straps. the loop just tore off the strap. I (250lb) and my gf(150) fell to the ground, and she was naked so it was actually kind of funny

I spent a great deal looking into Hammocks trying to pick out the best system. I was going to go with a Doublenest, but then realized there is so much better out there! Warbonnet, Hennessy (if you like the whole closed system/bottom entry thing - not me), and Clark. Clarks are THE best and that is what I went with. When you start adding up all the little costs, etc, the Clark actually makes the most sense. A little pricey but I do not think there is anything close. Just my opinion.

it's so damn comfy. He strings a tarp over it for rain protection and leaves his backpack under the tarp shadow (bear can stashed and strapped to a tree a bit away)

Thinking about picking up one this season my self. Just look so damn comfy.

Hammocks are difficult to sleep in for many. I would strongly advise you get a sleeping bag that can be opened at both ends and that you put the sleeping bag over the hammock. If you just lay in the hammock in your sleeping bag, you will have trouble staying warm.

When I bike tour, I just hang a hammock with a sleeping bag around it and run a piece of paracord parallel to the hammock just above it. Then I stretch a tarp over the paracord to keep in heat and keep out the weather.

2. how do you avoid getting wet? i always have a tarp and paracord with me so I just tie oppposite corners (diagonally) to whatever trees I already have my hammock attached to. rain will hit the tarp and trickle down over the sides
3. put your backpack under the hammock but bear hang your food obviously

5. hammocks are warmer than sleeping on the ground so i don't get what a bunch of the dipshits in this thread are saying. the ground is almost always cooler than your body when you are sleeping

Op here. I just bought an eno double nest. The super cute little blonde girl that sold it to me showed me the eno straps but said they all just take a couple ten foot sections on the strap they sell by the foot.

Soon as the weather gets better I'll take it out into the woods and try to nap. If it's comfy, I'll get some accessories for it and hopefully see that girl again.....damn she was cute, good perfume too.

I put my backpack in the hammock with me, I use a 3/4 sleeping pad in a hammock and then my backpack acts as insulation for my feet.

Works really well and I don't find it uncomfortable at all.

I don't know if that's true. You constantly have air moving under you, sapping your body heat. I don't know if it's more or less conductive than the ground, though.

How do people get their tarps that taut?
I never seem to be able to get my tarp completely taut. Then again, I only use 4 guylines and two prusiks along the ridgeline. Could that have something to do with it?

I just bought 1" nylon straps.
2, 10 foot lengths. I'll tie a loop knot on one end feed it back through around the tree and then do a,,, I don't know the name of the knot but you just stick a stick or something in the knot to make it hold, falls apart when you pull stick out... anyway. Figure it'll be infinitely adjustable, up to 10' anyway and very strong.

OP here. I finally tried out my new ENO.
It stopped raining and was partially sunny and breezy at about 50 degrees, not including wind chill.
God damn that hammock is cold. I mean it's colder than just standing in the wind. The pressure where you lay down on the hammock compresses all the dead airspace out of your clothing and the cold zips right through it whenever there is a breeze.
I totally see what you guys are talking about.

Very comfy though and when I camp, I have an air mat that should keep me warm.

Any advice for a tarp? I'm thinking of just going back and getting the ENO brand one. Any reason this is a bad idea?

When hammock camping are blow-up mats superior to foam roll-mats? Taking into account the inconveniences of both also - having to probably carry the rollmat on the outside of your rucksack, and having to inflate/deflate the airmat. Which is better for keeping you warm in the hammock? Which do you prefer overall?

I've used both the self inflating with the foam in it and just the blow up, pool raft style.
In my opinion the only benefit to the blow up pool raft style is that it folds down smaller and goes in the pack. I choose the blow up style because of that specifically.
Otherwise, I kind of like the foam one better, they both do the job.

It really depends on to many factors to list. Like are the 2 trees the only trees in the middle of a field on the top of a hill or are they in the middle of an average wooded area? Also, are the ties you are using metal and is the hammock made of metal?

Ok, I guess since the hammock and straps are nylon and the most obvious ground is going to be the tree itself that seems legit.

What about the raccoon thing though? More than once I've heard animals around my tent at night while camping in the national parks. Are there any animal/hammock related stories?

I found the single nest to be too short. Laying slantwise in the Brasilian style is much more comfortable, requiring a size or two up their line (depending on how lite you're trying to run)

I use straps and they work way better. I started with the nylon webbing cut off of appropriate weight rated ratchet straps. Now I've got several feet of different size, better material webbing waiting to be used this season.

You don't even need a knot on the tree end. Just wrap it around a couple times, once over itself if you like. It will hold through a tornado.
