Ok /out/

I am in need of some advice, Hunting/fishing seasons are just around the corner where I live and I need to buy some new hardware.

I'm stuck between choosing a tomahawk/ hatchet or a machete...

These are the tasks I would need either one of these for:
Clearing brush
Chopping wood (smaller branches)
Hopefully not but self defense against bears or mountain lions (in my area)

So what is better to go with?

Combo axe/machete

I prefer a smaller machete for doing what you have described, as well as setting up camp. It's a preference. I like the extra blade length. I find it useful to my style of woods craft. I have a couple of different models. One is a CS 'Barong" style at 10", and the other is a Bark River Knife & Tool 'Northwind' with about a 17 inch blade made of 0170-6. They don't make those anymore, but they do make a damn fine Golok.

Hatchet if live near boreal or mixed forest. Machete if you live near jungles/brushland. Tomahawk if you're 16th century indian.

Idea is to carry as least as possible, less weight while walking in the woods is easier better

Plus I think for the tasks I listed one should be efficient over the other?

If you're mostly clearing brush and chopping smaller wood then go with a good 14" machete like a Tramontina or Ontario. They need a bit of work out of the box though but are worth it. Or if you want something that'll come out of the box razor sharp buy a Condor Golok.

Axes are excellent tools, but only for dedicated chopping duties with lots of wood.

If you're going to be cutting anything larger than your thumb, go hatchet imo. If you live in like a jungle, sure, go machete. I live in FL and I've done some shrub-clearing with both a hatchet and a machete, and really there is nothing you can do with a machete that you cant to with a hatchet, and a whole lot you can do with a hatchet that you cant do with a machete.

Never used a kukri though, could be just what you need.

That's the CS one isn't it? If you're going for a more curved kukri shape but still want the weight of a machete, go for their Kopis model. It's longer, heavier, has a much better handle imo and more curve for better chops.

You should be looking for some no bullshit billhook. These things have been put to test for thousands of years and they still get the job done.

Personally I'm pretty fond of plain classical billhooks. These tools are well spread within Europe and come in different kind of shape and proportion.
In Northern Italy alone we have many different local models. People have been adapting them for centuries, trying to refine the ultimate tool to cope with local vegetation and specific tasks.

Billhooks are very good at light chopping, cutting branches and clearing brush in general (of course a powered brush cutter is much faster and better for this task).
Anyway, if you are planning some heavy chopping, you'd better take an axe as well with you.

What about this, hybrid tomahawk and hatchet
I don't think it weighs alot plus it's one solid full tang tool

Looks like it could chop some thick heavy duty lumber and small branches

Hatchets are pretty good. I have only used a hatchet because it is good for breaking branches and splitting wood. I have never seen the use of a mini sword where I live and the hatchet is easy to carry and can be a great weapon.

A good hatchet will keep you defended. And if you run into a cat make noise and yell and make yourself look big.
