Fishing General?

Anyone?

Personally my favorite is float tubing on either Lake Lenore or Lenice in Washington State. AMAZING fishing at the right times of the year. Rainbows, Cutthroat, and Brown Trout.

Best fights I've ever had from fishing outside of big fish like Salmon. Highly suggest it if you live in state or ever visit here.

I love fishing a few local lakes, northern Minnesota so we've got loads. My favorite to fish for are northern pike, Muskie, and bass. For lazy day fishing we have an amazing bluegill lake, and when we want something good to eat its pike/perch fishing, or bluegill.

It may have been the location, but I've never had luck with trout bigger than maybe ten inches long, and those were stocked.

What's the secret to getting them to bite? I was told they can see you and they don't respond if they see people on the shore.

Trout? It's all about knowing the environment. What kind of bugs are at the lake, the season they spawn in matters, etc. You being on the shore or in waders doesn't really matter. You just really need to figure out what they're feeding.

Best time to fish for trout is during hatches when all of the bugs are coming up off the lake or at spawning time when they're everywhere.

I usually go out from the east end of Long Island. By where Jaws was filmed.

That's what the idea was with this. Kick off a line of fishing generals. Most of the things I learned from fishing were all books my dad learned to tie flies and stuff in, so I don't really know what online links are useful. We could have people from the fishing community start putting stuff together though.

Me, my brother and my cousin would go out there every chance we got and fish like crazy.
Had plenty of brim, large and small mouth bass.
Its an amazing fishing spot, during the right times of year, you could catch a brim practically every cast.
Once when me and my brother were out there, he got this fuckhuge bass on the line. He pulled it up to the shore and I pulled it out (Would have snapped the line otherwise)
We jumped in the gator screaming "HOLY SHIT!" the whole way back to the house.
I could go on and on with stories from that pond, some happy, some sad. But I wont unless you really want me to.

Yeah buyer's guide would be great, the fishing market is full of gear, and it's a real jungle out there. I've seen 400$ reels that handle like shit, so you really need to shop smart. I can help with anything related to spinning and casting for bass, pike, catfish, trout, perch and zander.

I use sand crabs and some blood worms for bait. 9ft fishing rod since i'm usually going for halibut or corbina most of the time.

Ice Fishing is a personal favorite of mine, so relaxing. Just go on random lakes since they're fucking everywhere in minnesota, best trip was going out to lake of the woods though. Favorites gotta be Walleye and Muskies

I really like trying to catch largemouth. Its about that time of year again. My favorite baits are jigs.

Trout fishing (for rainbows anyway) is extremely boring to me. The places I've been its just too fucking easy. I really dont care for the taste of trout either. I feel about the same about catfishing. Ive got several ponds that I can go to and catch endless amounts of catfish with little to no effort. Occasionally I enjoy going after the larger catfish in big lakes or rivers near dams.

The white bass run here should be starting up soon as well. Its easy to catch em using soft plastic shad, and they taste fucking amazing.

trout fishing can be just as hard as fishing for largemouth. catching state stocked trout isn't the only way to catch trout. This is coming from somebody who fishes for bass in every season.

I actually don't keep many bass when I'm on public water. I don't think they taste that great. Crappie or catfish are good in my book. I've only fished for walleye a few times, the ones I ate werent bad. I've got several people that want me to remove smaller bass in their ponds because the population is out of whack. Most of these aren't large enough to eat. They get thrown in the woods or used as bait.

I'm aware catching state stocked isnt the only way to go. I've targeted Browns, Brooks, and Cuttthroats. I'm more of big open water type of angler.

Well I also did some off shore fishing so I can try to name the ones you can catch in SoCal.
White Seabass
Sculipin
Corbina
Pacific Halibut
Leopard sharks
Sand bass
Bat rays
Bonito
Yellowtail
Dorado
Albacore
Some small surf perch
And i've caught a 60 pound mako just a mile out of Oceanside Harbor which I had to release since the coast guard boarded us to do a routinely check up. I didn't want to bring a shark onto a crowded boat so I cut the line.

Europoor living in NJ here. My dad and his friends were naturally big on carp fishing so I would say that that would be my favorite type of fishing since I have the most experience in it. It's a very patient, laid back type of fishing so I can see why most people don't take to it, but carp put up mean fights. Tried my hand at some bass fishing and some deep sea angling, but what I really wish is that I had someone with some expertise in fly-fishing to teach me the ropes.

Fishing for panfish (Sunnies, rudd, roach) is also really enjoyable and they fry up really nice.

Down in baja mexico you can surf fish for rooster fish and they're very fun to catch. I highly recommend them if you ever plan to go down to mexico on a fishing trip.

It's in a rural area and it's probably one of the nicer creeks I've seen(there are a lot of shitty ones filled with garbage, this one is relatively clean and the water is even pretty clear in the shallow parts). I do my fishing there when I don't feel like going anywhere. It's pretty nice, there are bluegill, catfish, a few little bass swimming around, and my favorite carp. Catching a carp is always fun because you have to search them out, they generally stick to their own little pools and some of the ones in this creek have gotten pretty sizable. I also enjoy the bluegill, while it's not particularly challenging it's always fun to just drop your line in pop one out two minutes later.

Mitchells bay has to be the best. Ice fishing is probably the best in north America and fishing for musky/walleye/perch/bass/pike in the spring/summer attracts thousands of fisherman. The pike and bass actually become a nuisance for people fishing for walleye and perch because those fish taste a lot better.

There's a branch of Muskegeon River not too far from me. It's always got smallmouth and suckers.

I remember going down during the summer. There is a canoe launch, and some teens were down there drinking and fucking off.

I had a red, green, and white spinner on my walleye rod. I knew there were pike hiding by some of the fallen trees, but I didn't think they got real big.

Anyway, I had plucked a couple smallmouth bass, and traded one for a couple beers. I moved a bit closer to the girls in the water, because I saw a flash on the other side of the river. One of the bitches starts yelling at me, just being a general cunt. I toss the bait to the sand on the other side and start lightly jerking it back. Then "SPLASH." A fucking flash of white, and my rod bent over. The girl screamed and ran back to shore. The guys came down to see what was going on, and one grabbed my net to help me land that fucker. Thankfully, it ran straight to me, and I just hurried and took up the slack in the line.

43 inches. A big female pike that was 43 inches long. I didn't have a scale, but it was huge. The girls were too afraid to go in the water after that. And the guys were disappointed I threw it back.

I'm driving up to Wisconsin this weekend to do my yearly walleye fishing trip/family visit and was wondering if you guys had any secrets/tips for catching them. I usually use jig heads and minnows and that works pretty well I guess.

Alright so I moved from Mass, where I only really fished saltwater (used to work doing charters, etc) to Chicago where all I want to fucking do is catch some trout/salmon/walleye whatever is out here on my fly rod. I have a 7/8 weight 9ft rod with a decent size reel.

I hear the shores here get a whole lot of salmon come April, but I'm not sure what I'll need to do to catch them. Anyone with some advice/experience fishing the midwest and southern Lake Michigan?

If you walk out on to the other side of the island it is a wicked spot for lure and softbait fishing for kahawai. I've only used lures with great success but I have found the guys with softbaits hook up more often. Good fun if you take light gear.

I've tried them, the thing is that spinnerbaits are expensive as hell, and like I said before, you have to cast straight into snags to target these beasts, which usually means you lose $15 a pop within a few casts. Maybe when I get a boat I'll use them more but for now Stump jumpers will suffice.

Spinner baits are one of the more "snag proof" baits. I know how public waters can be ruined by idiots. I've actually given up fishing certain waters due to idiots. I watched a guy cast, get snagged, pull on it once, then pull out a blade to cut his line. He did this not once BUT TWICE. Nah, I use a smaller willow/Colorado blade 3/8 oz spinnerbait in my river and I's lasted me so long the bottom has no paint on it, both eyes are gone and the blade are all dented. I pitch it into trees and slow roll it in rocky currents. Meanwhile I can't cast a crankbait in my river more than 5 times without loosing it.

Spinnerbaits are pretty hard to snag

on another note of lures i found this one when cleaning out my grandpaws barn after he died. i got no effin clue what its supposed to immitate. ive never fished it, i just think its really unique. maybe a bumblebee? ive got more bass crankbaits than i know what to do with. its my least favorite type of lure. he had a friend that worked for Bomber and hooked him up.

He was using life bait fishing it off the bottom. I also failed to mention in the story that I had already pulled 5 "birds nest" of 50 ft+ each of line already. One of the nests had a fucking massive treble hook on it too. There are no species in that river that even get that large to use something like that.

Yeah took me about 30 minutes and I couldn't feel my back after I caught a second one that was the same size.

It can bury in itself, and if it does, and you are a far caster, it can pull real tight over itself and cut clean through. Usually only happens to me surf fishing when I'm using a lot of weight.

Oh hey, I've been waiting for one of these.

1. The only place I can fish without having to drive to or walk for hours only has trout and gear is is restricted to artificial lures and flies only. I've been trying my luck with a Red Devil spoon and a white Panther Martin (because that's all I have ATM) but so far I've come up blank for about four hours of effort in spots where I KNOW fish are; is there a lure and/or river feature that I should be using for river trout at this time of year?

2. A bit further away is a place that has catfish and I'm going to try going after them when the weather warms up a bit more. Does catfishing just consist of tossing out your rig, letting it sink to the bottom and then waiting for a bite? Also, how much bait should be on the hooks?

Nope, no natural or artificial baits of any kind; only artificial lures and flies are allowed. They've been trying to turn it into a fly-fishing spot for years now, and they have enough problems with the population already because of mexicans and white trash ignoring the rules and pulling out eight trout a day using salmon eggs and powerbait.

The only thing I've actually noticed works consistantly is throwing shallow divers up in the docks for largemouth bass/pike in my Michigan lake. I want to branch out and try different methods but nothing else ever seems to work :( been doing the same fucking thing for years now

For Catfish, you can literally use just about anything. I've caught them on pieces of hot dog, chicken liver, dough bait (cornmeal). My favorite bait to use tho, would be shrimp or mackerel

Yep. I like the Carolina rig. Egg sinker with a barrel swivel with maybe 12-18 inch leader, with a baitholder hook, maybe size 6 or so. I caught my personal best on a monster nightcrawler, 6 lbs. If the bites are slow i'll use mealworms or night crawlers with a marshmellow to float it up off the bottom of the weeds so the fish can find it easier. Just google the m&m fishing rig

I used to have those days when i was younger. This is why you bring tons of different baits/lures and pre-rig different set-ups before you go. Keep switching it up if you aren't getting results. I move spots or switch up my rigging every 20-30 min

How big fish get in areas that aren't fished never ceases to amaze me. My uncle lives in the middle of nowhere, literally more than two hours by car from any settlement with a 4-digit population, and he has a crazy-good perch lake within walking distance of his house; when I was there I caught two that were less than two ounces short of tying the national (and state) record and two more that qualified for trophy status; most of the time our rigs would only be in the water for about 10-15 seconds at the most before getting a bite.

Wisconsin here. I've never fished in the Chicago area, but I've fished further up the Lak Michigan shoreline.

Salmon run from lake Michigan in the fall, steelhead in the spring. The Steelhead run should be starting up relatively soon, if the weather ever stabilizes. I have no idea how one would go about catching walleye on fly rod

Since there are apparently a few California anglers in here, I'll recommend the "Fishing in California" set of books that are published by Marketscope Books. They're pretty damn awesome, but they can be something of a bitch to track down; to the best of my knowledge the only titles are as follows: Fishing in Southern California, Fishing in Northern California, Pier Fishing in California, Saltwater Fishing in California, Trout Fishing in California and Bass Fishing in California.

Haven't gone fishing since I was 12 or something. I got a new fishing rod last year but didn't get around to use it. Now /out/ just seems like an inspiration and I want to start fishing. Is it fine to use shrimps instead of living worms? Because I always felt bad impaling the worm on the hook.

Do some testing, shrimp may work ok. At least here in southern finland many perch tend to have different species of shrimp in their stomach.

Corn is another you may take look at, it's good for cyprinids (roach, bream ect.). And if you don't feel bad for killing the fish for bait you can use bits of roach to fish perch.

Bathroom, maybe, Shade, yes. There's this little park not far from where I live. There's some infrastructure near the water that, iirc, has bathrroms and the like.

Alright, sounds like this could work. As long as you treat it like a social outing where you just happen to be fishing, it should be good. Try to make small-talk and get to know her better during the course of the outing.

If possible, try and maximize her odds of getting a bite. If she can handle the fish, she'll have a sense of accomplishment; if she can't, you can either ask her to borrow the rod to land it or come up behind her, grab the rod and reel it in together while you're leaning up against her for some intimacy. Either way, she should (in theory) feel great; I'd also recommend catch and release, as she might be squeamish about killing the fish.

Confirm where the bathroom is prior to the outing; if possible, confirm if it's clean/well-kept. Ask her to dress in comfortable fishing clothes (assuming you know what'll be comfortable for your region/climate) she doesn't mind getting a bit dirty, and see if you can't stake out a place in the shady area beforehand.

Keep in mind, this is just what I'd do if I was taking a qt3.14 fishing. Your mileage may vary.

Dude Woolly Buggers are what it's all about. I'm a fly noob but I prefer my wet flies and streamers like that. Whenever a fish won't take something else, I'll toss it an olive or black bugger.

Woolly Buggers have always been my old faithfuls, though. Again, I'm a newbie fly fisherman, but they've always been reliable.

It varies from lake to lake, river to river, etc. Depends on when the bugs are hatching in your area. The idea behind Chironomids is though that they imitate that larva. So whenever the spawn is for the bugs is when you use them, although, they're fairly successful just in general.

I've killed alot of undersized fish. Why? Fishing on private ponds that have too many small fish in them. You remove the tiny ones because there is not enough food to allow them to get large. Too much competition is going on. If you think this is dumb, well you have no fucking idea how populations work in bodies of water. Public waters dont have this problem because enough people are raping the resources as is.
