To be a licensed tree surgeon here, you have to take a pretty thorough test at the state agricultural university. Too hard to wing it without study.
Otherwise, you'll have to start by working on the ground for a reputable tree service. Let them know before you are hired what you want too learn. If you show that you are a hard worker and have decent common sense and respect for saftey, they will defiantly train you. Where I am, good climbers are in high demand.
Be forewarned, it's one of the hardest, most dangerous jobs around. The rewards are pretty good though for a non degree job. Learn the whole bussiness. You won't find many monkeys doing it past 40.
