From the context about HBO, murder, and swamps I think he's saying something about Nic Pizzolatto--the guy that wrote True Detective--living in a shack in the bayous of Louisiana in order to do research for what he wrote. While that might be cool if it were true, it's completely fucking wrong. Pizzolatto was a writing professor at three different universities before moving to Hollywood.
