I'm a guy who just did the whole A.T. with basic camping gear, including a .22 rifle, 500 rounds of ammo, and some fishing lines and hooks.
I didn't spend a single dollar on the whole thru hike.
Hunted and fished and foraged the ENTIRE way.
Would travel until mid day, then switch to getting food or relaxing until night.
Was 10/10 comfy. Considering living full time like this.
