Quick question:

Going hiking through think brush, considering to switch my bowie and hatchet for a machete in order to save on space/weight. Thoughts on this alone?

Secondly, i don't want to spend a lot, thinking between either the CS Kukri or Gerber Gator.

Pro kukri: small, workhorse build, batons easily.
Pro gator: length, saw, grip.
Con kukri: CS, no shock absorbtion.
Con gator: cannot baton, grip can get loose.

I chopped a 4x4 in half with my gator. I wish It was full, fucking, tang though! What is batoning exactly? I would go with the kukri.

Did the handle get loose after you chopped it?

Batoning is when you put the knife on the middle of a log and hit the back(baton) of the spine of the blade with another stick, to cut the log in half.

Its used as a substitute for a hatchet. And when you want to make firewood, its a life saver. Though, the Gator has the saw with which it can saw through everything, but it much more time consuming than batoning imo.

I have no idea atm, though i think im leaning towards the kukri as well.

Granted, this can destroy your machete, so i don't really know if the CS kukri is up for it. After all, its CS.

KABAR cutlass.. medium sized, good quality steel. its a amazing chopper. i use it also for small tasks. just clean it with water and put some tool oil on it.

the sheath is a medium quality nylon/leather combination. the seams are weak. you can peel em of. however. the sheath is also riveted.

there is only one way to carry it. outdoors i always carry it without the sheath.

How much does cutlass cost? Also, i have to see if its available in my country. Also, tell me: is it full tang? (i presume it is, it has to be) And what steel is it? Also, i guess you own one, did you put it through hard work? If one breaks on me (and thats my fear with the kukri) is i'll be left dependent on my friends gear (and i hate that), not to mention that i'd be made fun of for buying a mallninja one-use machete.

....something you hardly ever do but every tacticool idiot here thinks is the be all & end all of knife utility so they buy a fuckhuge cutlass which they'll never be able to use for fine work but will provide lots of lovely extra weight to haul about for no good reason

id go with the cs kukri mchete, its pretty damn stout and the heavy forward feel to it is better than the similar feeling you get from a longer blade. all without the flexiness you get in longer machetes. should you decide to get the gator then keep in mind for a little more money you can get an ontario machete thats waaay better.

My gators handle is just fine. Is your kukri full tang? So that's what batoning is, thanks!
The only blemish is when I his the gator in dirt and a rock bent a portion of the top 1/8th of the blade, works fine though. I plan on taking it hiking, but I'm afraid the handle will fuck up.

I just gave the ontario machete a peak. Unfortunately it is not available in my country, i would have to order it in or something. That is not a bad thing in itself, but im set to head out on the 30th of april, and this is sorta a last minute change of plans.

Yeah, the kukri is full tang. Or at least the website says so, and i believe it to be true. I guess you'd never know about the gator, it seems a bit "weak" but im sure it performs well, especially in the price range. The gator has hex bolts, right? You can always carry a hex wrench with you to fix it. Thats not a bad thing, considering that it helps with the shock absorption.

Do you know maybe what steel is the gator?

im not him but i have both the cs and the gerber and while i dont know what the gator is made of (google gerber's mystery steel) i do know that its not as good a steel as the kukri (1055 iirc). the kukri holds its edge far better, i still keep my gator around but if i had to choose one itd be the kukri

If you own both, and you say that the kukri is better i have no reason to distrust you. But, could i ask you to post a picture of your kukri edge? Since its 1055 steel its pretty high in carbon so i want to see if it chipped a lot.

All in all, you made up my mind, im going to go with the kukri.

maybe it would be easier when you say from where you are? however. in Germany, they go for 60€ each.

i made two times firewood for a 5-6 hour fire with it. it works pretty good. no blade chipping, or rust. it stays sharp.

I took the handle off once and the tang is so fucking small I just don't have any faith in it at all. Once you know how flimsy the piece of metal keeping the blade in the handle is, you'll never trust it again.

That said, the saw back is pretty cool. I use it locally but wouldn't take it anywhere that i'd be inconvenienced if it broke on me.

Get a machete, make sure the blade is though, not hard. It has to bounce when you move it. Something flexible. Not a heavy or thick blade. Do not buy stainless steel.
Cold steel 18' is ok.

Thicker branches, multitask? kukri is a good choice. gerber gator is ok.

Thanks for the insight. I did opt for the kukri for the reasons you mentioned. Its shorter than most, yet longer than an average kukri. And yes, basically undergrowth.

The main reason is the multitasking aspect of the it. The hatchet + bowie action in a blade.

Well... not really. Depends on what you need this machete for. There are thin, light machetes used to cut down tall grass and bushes, and there are thick, heavy machetes which are basically large knives, used to cut down through thicker stuff.

I have a rat tail machete for tall grass, works perfectly. But then, of course, it's not really what this Gerber machete aims for, considering the saw on the other side.

Personally i don't always think spending a ton of money of a machete is a good idea, I always buy cheapest one i can find and I've never had one break TBH. I picked up an 18inch latin machete for like 5$ at a hard ware store that i've litterally cut down 4-6 inch thick trees with . I have a smaller 12 inch style elongated kukri one that i've chipped bent the blade on a bit (from miss-use on my end) but i was able to fix it back up. also i've had those two for like 2-3 years so dont get the idea i've had em for a month or 2. the only thing i do is if its a plastice handle first thing i do is take that shit off, get some wood and wooden dowel rods (i think thats what they are called) use them as pegs (like katana's if anyone is familiar with the handle design) and then wrap in tape and sometimes parachord

just my 2 cents
