Question One; Just about to start out hunting rabbits and after a good knife for skinning them. Options?
Preferably something on the not expensive side.

question two; For hunting wabbits, I'm thinking a .223, but maybe an air rifle. I've read anything under 800fps would be inhumane, and so would anything other than a headshot from air rifle.
Thoughts, opinions and experiences welcome.
Would ask /k/, but just consolidation.

Rabbits are easy to skin, you really don't even have to have a knife. You can just pull/tear the skin off.

I would recommend a .22 for shooting them. I think a 223 is overkill. I have no experience with air rifles

A .22lr is the best for wabbits if you plan on having enough left of them to eat. You can buy a Mora knife cheap and they're fine for skinning. For such a thin skinned animal all you really need to do is cut the fur on the top of the back then pull it free or if you want to keep the fur cut off the head and peel the pelt off like a sock, it comes off rather easy either way, not much use of a blade is needed for them.

i have shot rabbits in head and neck wtih 22 LR and air rifles, absolutely fucking useless.

i would want a centre fire rifle, maybe a .300 or .308 for balsting rabbits.

.22lr is plenty to kill a rabbit. I have a .17 hmr, that alone destroys rabbits. Stay in that range. .308 is insane. Will blow the rabbits to bits. I have experience hunting jackrabbits. Shot one with a .223. Barely any rabbit left. Stay small caliber. People saying use a .308 baka, obviously no knowledge.

a 12 foot-pound .22 cal, or .177 with something like H&N baracuda hunter extreme will do the job.

A .22 cal walther terrus with 15 grain domed pellets will take a rabbit at 50 yards.

when are you people going to learn that fps is a meaningless number unless acompanied by pellet weight.

A typical .177 pellet weighs 8.44 grains. A .22 pellet is around 15.89 grains. Alloy pellets (which is what wallmart specials use to get those high fps values) are under 5 grains.

Also - skirted projectiles (like pellets) suck at transsonic speed.

A .22 cal, 15.89 grain pellet with a muzzle velocity of 600 fps will do the job on a rabbit just fine (you need around 8 fpe delivered to take them down).

Aren't rabbits considered an invasive species in Australia? If they're way overpopulated and fucking up the native species, I can see blasting them with a .308 and covering a 300m radius from a single spot. It's a shame not to eat what you kill though. Anything over .22lr and it won't be good eating. Even with .22lr, I would stick to subsonic solid points.

You don't eat the bullet, and even if you did, it would just pass through your system. It isn't soluble lead which is the type that causes lead poisoning (usually from industrial applications) even if it was, the odd bullet wouldn't be enough to cause harmful levels of lead.

Except glass marbles are shithouse ammunition, fire them from any powerful sort of slingshot and they hook left or right after a short distance. Metal ball bearings or small lead ball sinkers are the way to go.

.22 every time. Usually when you shoot a rabbit it pops up in the air, I like to try and shoot it again in the air

Gerber EAB @9USD is all you need for rabbits. Change the 20 cent blade every hundred rabbits.

For the same price, you could get a basic Mora or Opinel. They're much nicer if you can sharpen okay.

The bullet weighs half as much as 22lr, but once you get past 2000fps like the .17, it's hydrostatic shock that does all the mutilation. If your country says .22lr is too weak, call bullshit on that. Norway limits .22lr for hunting because silencers are legal there. With subsonic .23lr ammo and a silencer, all that you can hear is the firing pin drop and the bullet impact. Hunters that the law can't hear, they can't catch. This law is to reduce poaching and out of season hunting. It's not about being humane.

The outcome depends on shot placement too though. If you look in >>968079 the top ones heart exploded when the .22 hollowpoint hit it, while the gutshots in the other two left nearly no blood or trace at all

If you hit a running rabbit in the butt with .17hmr, you lose more than half the meat. My point was that .17hmr is great for pest control, but way to much for rabbits you plan to eat. Even .22lr Stingers ruin the meat or spill guts if you don't get a headshot.

I actually was bit off, you may hunt wild rabbit with .22lr, for hare or brown hare you need bigger caliber. With 22. hornet and 17HMR you may hunt hare and brown hare.

Funny thing; in english version they didn't bother to translate that in hunting class 1, bullet weight doesn't matter if the bullet has at least 300 joules at 100 metres.

And no, noone enforces the hunting laws, because no-one have right to check your weapons or anything on your person, only police has that right and they are in the cities. Exception being the moose hunting partys who may kick you out of the party if you don't play along the rules.

Victorianox hunter pro is around $100 AUD and is a great general prupose hunting knife, i use mine on rabbits, ducks and even deer all the time
