Do any of you take instruments with you on 2-3 day camping/hiking trips?

I like to take my mountain dulcimer with me. It's appropriate for hiking in the southern Appalachians and only weighs a couple of pounds.

They're great and actually very easy.

It's also a lot easier on your wrist to play than an instrument you'd hold like a guitar or fiddle.

I live on an island next to the beach, so my outdoors experience consists of snorkeling and sailing, but I'd love to learn to play the steel drums. Seems appropriate for my environment, and every time you see them being played, it's outdoors.

Looks like the dulcimer has 4 strings, so uke -> delc could possibly be easy to pick up.

Whenever I go out I do tend to bring my ukulele. I have a Tenor, and even though it's the third largest of the four, it's still VERY light weight.

The Tenor do have the higher pitch than a guitar, but not the stereotyped soprano sound that people think of when they think of ukulele. By far one of the funnest instruments I've tried yet.

Playing outside makes it 10x better.

I tried to learn the harmonica after I watched Les Stroud jamming out to some blues in the Alaskan wilderness.

I still suck at it but it's fun to huff and puff every now and then, and in a survival situation I could probably take it apart and get some useful stuff out of it.

I have 2 djembe, jaw harp, metalophone, flutophone, and kalimba/thumb piano I normally take with me, but only if I know others with instruments will be there. The djembe I have is one of those massive King cheetah ones from x8drums.com so I don't take it with me very often. I don't do drum circles either. I prefer some orchestration as apposed to 100% improv.

I have an Udu that I like to haul around.

It's not exactly what many people would call portable on account of being a large clay pot but I actually use it as storage and have a little sling it sits in. It's like having a clay backpack!

I just love the sounds it makes and how you don't have to think about anything ,you just.. play... and see where you end up musically.

One thing really, Really, REALLY pisses me off though, when some dumbass teen comes up and says "Hey man, that's a funny lookin bong there"
I fucking hate that.

I have one of these (Noble Bass C) that I pack around with me. Weighs about a pound, so it's not too bad. The volume that it takes up in a pack is usually more of an issue than the weight. Playing it on the edge of a mountain at sunrise or set creates a feeling for me like no other...

Ocarina fag here. What is reasonable about bringing a guitar with you whilst hiking for days? Forgive me if I don't enjoy dragging around my guitars or piano with me for days through mountains and woods... Also sorry for the stupid question but I'm wondering if there's something really cheap (or free) and nifty I could bring for a camping trip i'm doing tomorrow with some friends. We're gonna be in an established campground in the city limits, and there's 50% chance of rain from 10pm-5am; we have a huge tent with a divider in the middle and plenty of food, we are also near a really shitty lake. Anything interesting come to mind?
