I'm sorry, really sorry, to create yet another gear thread.

However, this is the gear thread for people who don't want the latest/greatest/snazziest/ultralightlowimpactamazinggoodlookingrucksack.

I just want a fucking backpack that works. Preferably, mil surp (and honestly, from any country-not just US). It's cheap and proven.
However, there are alot of choices, and I'd love to avoid an ALICE/External frame pack.

Pick related is what I'm looking for, but I don't know what it's called. Not huge. Used mostly for 2-3 overnights, occasionally a week trip.

It's nice because of the pads and stuff, and I guess when you don't have to put it on over a flak, it's really nice. What I don't like about it is, it's easy to over load it and make it as heavy as your grandmother because of it's size. Also, when you over load if frequently, the shoulder straps may rip on you fairly easily.
I also don't like it because it's basically a large tube. there's little to no way to organize your stuff. you have the main area, and the top flap, and any additional pouches you wish to attach.
It's got straps and buckles everywhere for attaching who knows what, the only thing I ever carried on the outside was a foam isolation mat and a tent, occasionally my rifle.
over all, I say it's really comfortable, yet, not the best thing available.

I like the alice. It's frame nicely supports the weight you carry, but it might make it a little uncomfortable. I also like how the alice pack has areas to allow you to organize stuff. It's not huge, and they're old, but that's my preferred.

The ILBE isn't bad, I just have bad experiences with it.
for carrying food clothes and a towel, you don't need more than a day pack.

it's the smaller pack. it was designed to allow you to carry a smaller load into combat situations, and allow you to store the stuff you don't need right at that moment in the rear.

I don't know, I'm a marine, never used that army gear. I don't think it is though, the corps, and the army generally develop gear separately.

Swedish military backpacks - go for about 20 dollars, sturdy as fuck, 40L capacity, lots if straps to attach more gear to, a good deal are waterproof (inner coating of fabric). Comfy, the support system distributes the weight a-ok. No zippers to fail. Had mine half submerged, interior remained dry.

There is metal frame, but not like the ones on alice bags. I'd say this is a steal.

I really rate Mountain Warehouse stuff, I've been super happy with everything I've bought from them, their own label stuff is miles better than Hi-Gear from Go Outdoors

Looks like a MOLLE rucksack. There's a ton of them but it looks like the one you posted just has 1" webbing(straps) that you tie onto the frame.

I've used one of these for about 8 years. Had to repair it a few times, but being made of canvas made it easy.

have you ever talked to a fucking boot? it may be fucking cheap, but its a terribly uncomfy pack

just get any goddamn used 70+l internal fram backpacking pack of CL and you should be just dandy

There's always a ton of quality packs on ebay. Most of the time the sellers just don't backpack anymore and want to get rid of them. If you google the pack's name, then you'll usually find some reviews and specs

Any recommendations for particularly comfy and durable packs?

I often end up carrying about 30 to 60 pounds of rocks (not including gear) and the bag I have ends up bruising my shoulders after only a day. It has some light padding and I've wrapped extra cloth over the straps, but it is not enough and I don't own anything better to use for padding. Also it's nylon and the holes it gets are easy enough to patch up, but I think I would rather have canvas or something more tear resistant.
