What are some good passive deterrents to keep predators off your property and especially out of your yard?

I may be moving to a rural area sometime soon, and I've been looking at a good deal on a cabin pretty well deep in the woods. I'm a bit worried about large predators coming after my dog if he's in the yard. I know it's unlikely, but it only takes one run-in with a bear or cougar to kill your dog, so no real room for mistakes here.

All I can find on the internet is really obvious bullshit like "put away your birdfeeders!" (I won't have any) "don't store dog food inside!" (no shit?) "don't put your garbage out overnight!" (again, no shit)

I'd like to have a dog door so the dog can go out into a fenced area as he pleases during the day if I'm out.

in my inexperienced brain, I feel a solid fence (can't eat what you can't see) with angled extenders at the top (to prevent climbing animals) and buried mesh (to prevent digging) would be effective enough as long as it was too tall for a cougar to just jump straight over.

Is investing in a hot wire not worth it? would my idea for this particular type of fencing work? my dog is about 50 pounds and could probably scare off a black bear that wandered close (they're the only bears in the area), but I doubt he could do anything with a cougar.
