Where can I even get started on fishing? (with a rod and shit, I think it's called fly fishing) Me and my buddies decided to pick up on this hobby and are all saving up.

Where do you live? Fishing regulations are different in every place. If you are in the US, your state almost certainly has a website telling you all the regulations, whether you need a license (most states), etc.

There are different types of rods. Fly fishing is one thing, but not all fishing with a rod is fly fishing. I have been angling but I never used flies, it was all just regular lures and hooks.

Beer, some tunes on my phone when I feel like it and just making little comps with each other on who gets a certain species first/biggest fish. Also OP, check out and join some local fishing forums or even clubs if you're so inclined. Fisherman are some of the most helpful lot you'll encounter whether IRL or on the internet. I'd like to answer some of your questions but they're too vague for me and I don't live in the US so the fishing there is a whole nother planet to me sorry.

I mainly try to stay as comfortable as I can. Stay hydrated, have good rain/sun protection. Some of my most enjoyble fish have included using a portable grill and relaxing with good company. IMO live/baitfishing is great for this.

Because for some species it is the prime feeding time at dusk/dawn, when the smaller fish are running around and insects and other types are all out on the water. Just like any other animal, Fish also have Nocturnal predators.

Not only that, but if you're an outdoorsy type of bloke, it's pretty damn nice to be sitting on the bank with rod in hand, in relative peace listening to all the animals waking up around you and watching the sun come up.

Heh, only really a Freshwater fisho myself so know how you feel. Never Caught a Murray Cod but going on a trip tomorrow to try and land one.

One day I'd love to go to NT/QLD and catch a Barra.

Angling is the term you might be looking for. It's just generic fishing with a rod and reel. Fly fishing is some kind of art where you need an expensive setup and then you use the Jedi force or something to float your line through the air over where fish may be. Don't bother with that.

You shouldn't need to save up much money, unless your talking about trip expenses. Beginner rod/reel combos are <$20, get a license, some bait or lures and you should be set.

Protip: get your hardware somewhere cheap like walmart, or used at a thrift store. Then get your bait or lures at a small shop as close as you can to the place you want to fish. Ask the guy there what to buy, where to go, what times of day. Good luck!

And yeah, for a basic fishing rod... walmart works just fine. For cleaning the fish, figure out (via google) what you'll be fishing, then youtube a video for cleaning it. Cooking? Grill or frying pan is awesome.

Anyway, OP asked about eating also, and this really depends on the kind of fish. Trout and salmon can be grilled or baked and eaten with the skin on. Others have scales and need to be filleted and fried like a steak. After you figure out what species you might catch, reply or post again, OP.
