I'm thinking of becoming a hobo. Seems like a great lifestyle. Are there any downsides? Or is it as glamorous as they make it seem?

A friend of mine is an EMT. You should hear some of the horror stories he tells about hobos. I have a family member who is an RN. You should hear some of the horror stories she tells about hobos.

"Glamorous," is not the word I'd ever use with, "hobo".

Regardless of your homelessness, you still control your warmth, hunger, and happiness.

Some homeless people are very cold and hungry. Other homeless people make it easy on themselves and essentially dont have to become mature adults until they already have gray hair.

I just realized 2 days ago when i renewed my ups store mailbox that i have been homeless for a year.

Sometimes it sucks but hey after i get done in town tomorrow i am heading to the beach. To camp, fish, hike and swim for 2 weeks. Then i will drive to a national forest and hike for 2 weeks.

It ain't for everyone. And if you don't have an income then it gets hard. But about 1k a month keeps me going. Lots of chefboyardee diners though.

I fully admit i have a truck and multiple income sources that require no work.

But i am fully hobo in that if i am not sleeping in my truck i am in a tent. Here is a nice picture of the houston park i am spending my day waiting until tomorrow to show up at my bank. Tomorrow i will head to freeport or high island to camp fish and swim.

I work closely with the homeless in my community. I live in south florida so cold is never a problem but the heat sure as fuck is. And cops are brutal with rhem just because it looks bad to tourists. Middle of the stafe and north florida is very hobo-friendly. Tons of support from community and really pleasant environment, lots of trees but without swamp, never too cold.
The other people you come across with be your biggest allies and biggest enemies. Most homeless are mentally unstable and liable to do anything from rape you to shank you

If you are expecting to be a drifter, you're in for even more of a shock. You better have access to resources or a vehcile or you won't make it.

It is really fun if you are into the lifestyle AND if you are young, start in your 20s and dont do it more than a couple of years, the more time you are into that, the harder it is to get out and become a normal person, and the thing is you cant and wont want to be living in the street after 30 or 35. It becomes harder, you are not a handsome young kid anymore so poeple will be less simpathetic, also you have less energy, you get tired more easily, you start having chronic pain, etc.

tldr; its a cool adventure to have only if young enough and just a short period of time.

It's pretty great; you work when you want to without any long-term commitments, you travel all the time and still have money to spend. Try to find work in a nice small community or farm town, make sure the boss knows that it's only temporary, ask if he knows a place to set up a tent (sometimes he'll have a room to offer you), and when you feel like moving on give him notice and finish your project if you ever expect to need work in the area again.

I tried the freight train hopping thing 20 years ago. It was hard, went hungry, got harassed a lot by cops and locals alike. If you are young and want to piss off a few years doing something unproductive just so you can have stories, go for it.

I found it much better when a friend got me a job on the rail road and I became a certified engineer. I got to play on trains and it actually paid.

I am the vet that lives in his truck and camps. I survive off a little over 1k a month and beleive it or not i put about 500 in savings most months.

My bills are:
Phone - 60
Truck insurance - 110 (full coverage still just in case. It is my home)
Storage locker - 88
Gym membership -25

I pay aboymt 100 every 6 months for a mailbox too. The rest goes into food and supplies and an occasional cheap motel. And liquor.

You could probably get by fairly well on 800 a month but you wont be able to travel as much or eat as well.

Very, very true. That said, there are a few very skilled individuals that consistently make money because they understand how the market works and they don't let emotions influence their decision-making. You have to consider that for every dollar one person lost from making a bad trade, a smarter person made by making a good trade.

But I'll say it again: I don't recommend that anyone else try it, you'll probably lose your money.

I know a guy who lives in a van by choice. He's an old retired vet, living on VA benefits and such. He stays in the van so he has more money to spend on other things. He's a pretty crazy conspiracy theorist and is one of those preppers that buys anything and everything someone tries to sell him if they say it's "survival" related. He even raises chickens in cat carriers in his van. He's a little insane, but he's a sort of idol of mine, and he seems pretty happy being a hobo.

However your average hobo is sleeping on a park bench and eating out of a Dumpster. If you believe that is a great lifestyle, more power to you and I wish you well, but I hope the downsides are obvious.

Are you asking how we would get a job when our resume has been devoid of employment for the last decade? I can't speak for everyone, but but for those of us that aren't crazy or drug addicts, finding employment shouldn't be the most difficult thing in the world. You just have to explain away the lack of employment as 'cultural enrichment' and 'an education in personal budgeting'. Most employers would rather hire someone they find interesting anyway.
