>>1008577I don't think that hand guns are necessary to carry around every day and you pretty much summed up why yourself.
Any number of items could potentially be live saving in a particularly scenario. For example:
Seat belt cutter & glass breaker
Complete ratchet & socket kit
Complete first aid kit
Flare gun
Giant roll of duct tape or super glue
Automatic External Defibrillator
Hypodermic needle and antivenom
You can think of scenarios that could conceivably happen on any random day which you'd die if you didn't have one of these items. The reason that people don't carry these things around all the time is that though it's possible that you might need these things, it's not very likely, and like you said, carrying all this stuff around doesn't make any sense.
So yah, having a gun could potentially save your or a friend's life, but think, is the chance that you will need it any higher than, say, the chance of you or a friend getting bitten by a black widow spider? Honestly, I think the chances of needing some of these things on my list are more likely than the chance of needing a gun. I've never been in a situation where I've needed a gun, but I've been around medical emergencies or terrible car crashes where a large first aid kit could have saved a life.
So i guess what I'm saying is that unless you have a particularly dangerous job or live in an incredibly dangerous place, carrying a gun is just dead weight and unnecessary preparedness.
