Even in well maintained garden you will have to deal with rocks & roots that will stress the tool a lot. Even more so in Out. Most often they break or bend at where handle turns to digging part, if I recall her words.

I think it might work, because this one time I was ordered to prepare firing position/foxhole in 30min and I only had a bayonet. I did not fail, so I think with mini-shovel I would do a lot better & faster.
I heard good word about those among military geardos, but don't take my word for it, for I have not used one.
