IIRC that issue was related to to a discrepancy between the tire manufacturer (firestone) and Ford's suggested inflation pressures.

The stock vehicle in and of itself is not a rollover hazard.

Me again. The Firestone fiasco was in 2000, as it applied to the Ford Exploder model line.

Most 4x4s from that era were, though. Because that's right about when the SUV boom was taking off and people started buying Bronco II, Troopers, Samurais, etc as everyday cars and driving them like everyday cars even though they handled differently than a Corolla or an Escort at highway speeds.

No, the Bronco II was a fully enclosed 4x4 built on the Ranger truck platform. It had a fairly standard wheelbase width, but was taller so the gravity of center was higher. When driven at highway speeds they had a tendency to roll if you had to turn sharply. This was a common problem with most light 4x4s in the 80s-90s like Wranglers, Troopers, Samurais, etc. Insurance companies in the US started jacking up rates on them and manufacturers started focusing on bigger SUVs with wider wheelbases.

Also, light pick up trucks of the time also had pretty bad rollover/crash ratings but it was less of a scandal because those were largely sold as commercial/work vehicles, while the SUVs were being sold as everyday/family vehicles.

Here's mine.
33-12-50's, 4.56's, locked rear, welded front, woody drive shafts, custom body and suspension lifts, HEADERS! (I bought the last set in existence apparently), chopped fenders, solid I-beam bumpers, custom transmission, dual batteries, AC converted to air compressor, amputated sway bars, etc, etc.

You weld the gears of the differential together so both axles have to spin instead of one or the other.

It's just a cheap way of building a spool or a permanent diff locker. Basically my front and back axles are locked so all 4 wheels turn when it's in 4.

It's a really common mod for Bronco II's because they have shitty front U-joints. So if you're running big tires your axles will spontaneously grenade when you hit the gas. We get around this problem by locking or spooling the front axle, it spreads the load and prevents one tire from suddenly loading or unloading and blowing the axle.

the next step after that is swapping in a solid front axle but I figure if you're going to do that you should just build a vehicle that already has one.

Yeah, if you leave the front hubs locked on pavement your U-joints will explode.

the back axle is stronger on B-II's so it's fine locked on pavement. Just causes tire wear. But the front can't take that stress.

Mine doesn't drive on pavement anymore though. Once you do what I did to them they're worthless and illegal on the highway. Death traps at anything over 55mph.

I have a $300 brass gear amd pin that essentially just makes my truck posi. Can weld it to but they are probe to failure.

However, mybdad welded mine up in high school. 62 chevy steoside with a 350. Fucker would do slao wheelies daily and hop all over when u spin. Nevee broke it.

This is why i love my 1975 ragtop Jeep CJ5, the lack of a upper body removes a major rollover hazard. The lack of power brakes means i can still stop even if the power fails, the lack of power steering adds additional stall safety and the lack of a seatbelt means injury in the unlikely event of an accident is no problem as i am guaranteed to be dead.

My only real injury threat is getting my thumbs broken or cut off if i hit a big rock.
