Even if you're not a great looking guy like me, as long as you're you're /fit/, dress decently, have a warm, neutral expression as you work, good posture, people will not be put off by you. You'll get into places you didn't think you could, take photos of randos unbothered, nobody assumes you have bad intent, and people will build up the courage to ask the guy with the camera gear to take their photo. If you know it's a good photo, you have the best in you could possibly ask for. It's an open door to something. At bare minimum it's practice conversation for next time where you might do better. These are soft skills that will directly assist any photography hobby.

When you hand it back to them, take a few steps back and take a shot (with you camera) of them looking at the photo on their phone. Above all, don't overthink it.
