Pretty much. Understand use cases and what actual features is important to you.
(I wanted a camera sling with external pocket for umbrella and water bottle, that basically eliminated most options out there down to a handful)

How is the Peak Design messenger bag? I was looking for something relatively weather proofed against light rain and can hold a Nikon Z8, 24-120mm f4, and one or two voigtlander primes. The peak design messenger bag looked perfect but I was curious if anyone had any suggestions that wasn't a fugly backpack.

lately i just leave a telezoom on my pentax most of the time like a 70-210mm

anything close up i can just use my phone or step back a bit, the ability to take distance shots is the only reason to use a camera imo and its probably why im gonna switch to a m43 setup

if you're a thirdie, can only use <1920x1080 screens, and never print, it is borderline impossible to see quality differences between cameras without zooming in because the computer converts everything into an equally small number of visibly large squares.

What do people recommend for packing cubes? I've got a Peak Design Sling 6L which takes up too much space inside my backpack. Has anyone got good news about the Tenba BYOB 7 or Ape Case 33 to share about storing a mirrorless with a lens, plus x2 extra lenses?

I have the v2 version, I think. It is good as a laptop bag and I can hold some decent length lenses but the flap is annoying to get stuff out of while slung, and the quick access zip isn't wide enough to comfortably get a camera out of. Give it a go since YMMV

I've handled a ton of backpacks and bags as I buy and sell a lot of gear. One tell tale sign if the manufacturer has any idea what they are doing is whether or not the zipper thingies have a rubber coating or are designed in a way that suppresses noise as you are walking around.. if metal parts keep clanking when you are out it becomes tiresome and annoying quickly.. If it makes noise it is just a stupid, cheaply made product, if it doesn't they put some thought into it.
If there is one product in the camera market that is entirely the buyers market then camera bags is it. I am sure pretty much any shop that takes trade-ins etc have a bunch laying around that is available for next to nothing if you ask because people who are getting rid of their old gear usually don't give a carp.

I personally went with a Peak Design Small Cube. You can go even smaller with the X-Small but all you'll be able to fit is the camera and the attached lens, nothing else. It's a great minimal setup if you only want to take one camera with just the attached lens.

I just use a Tasmanian Tiger ML Focus bag for everything now, unless I need to bring a spare lens. Weatherproof and well made, interior flaps are velcro and can be removed or adjusted. MOLLE compatible too so you can attach it to a belt/vest/backpack if you want.

Generally speaking bags aren't reliable weather proof; backpackers will use pack liners for stuff that must stay dry (trash compactor bags are popular for this).

I took it the weatherproof aspect was important, the ML bag is rain proof and even has a built in rain cloak that comes out the bottom if it's really pouring. Idk I don't really believe in buying a million different bags either, I bought the ML because it works with everything I've got.

Or a waist bag like the Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar Pack when walking around. On the picture, the straps are optional if you're carrying less than 10lbs.

All the popular bag brands, Peak Design, Wandrd, Wotancraft, have sling bags that could easily convert to waist bag. Sling bag is the current youthful fashion. I think waist carry will make a comeback, per the usual two-decade cycle.
