I like to thing of the highly staged things as more like abstract sculpture or, like, atonal music: all emotion without any strict meaning.
Op's picture isn't my favorite, but I'll try to explain what I felt when I saw it anyway. My first thought was "why are all those balloons there? Kids have balloons, are there supposed to be kids in that river? Kids don't wear suits, so it makes sense that he doesn't have one. Did he do something to those kids?" There's no satisfying answer to all of that, but I still got my moment of unease out of it.
(I like these things more when there are bodies being abstracted. Those draw me in more.)
I guess with the picture you posted I got a more complete story of what is going on, but it wasn't as fun for me. Does that make sense?
