Raptors usually sit with their backs to the sun, for obvious reasons.
Set up at a perch so the sun is behind you, and you'll end up with pic related: Bird sitting with its back to you. Obviously you get better exposure too, but that is secondary. This gives you time to aim, focus, change settings etc before getting its attention for a good shot.
It still hadn't even seen me by shot #2. It was just alerted to the sound of my shutter, and started turning to look. I only got 3 more shots before it was gone.
Was a great day, because my gf and I had planned this out the week before, and had been waiting for a nice bright day where the sun was also low enough to light the underside of the bird. We sat there for nearly 9 hours and were just about to give up.
