I don't get why Rodinal is so popular for 35mm, it's treated as a "general purpose" developer while it's not. It's a speed-losing, highly active (high acutance, high grain) developer, invented in a time when 35mm or even 120 was not even a thing. Same for fast (with the current meaning of the word) films.
At this point I think it's just out of habit that people recommend it, and others jump on the recommendation bandwagon because it's the only thing they tried and it "worked".
D-76, Xtol, ID-11 are general purpose developers.
Rodinal is special purpose, for high acutance at the expense of grain and speed. Similarly for HC-110, high accutane and slow dev times at the expense of grain. Just like Perceptol is special purpose, for fine grain at the expense of speed. Or Microphen is special purpose for high speed at the expense of grain. Etc etc.
