The difficulty was matching the skintones which is where the real 'look' comes from I think. It could be done by creating a mask for the skintones and then tinting them and adjusting separately. I think the MM video used much warmer bulbs than the madonna one which looks like it used standard white lights.
Even with all that though, the mm video (because it was shot analogue) has that weird soft sharpness that's hard to imitate. The closest way of getting that on digital is to put some kind of filter in front of the lens to make the image slightly softer but still recorded at a high resolution.
