Like a previous anon, I'm also looking for a 400mm telephoto lens for birding and to take out while kayaking for sailboats and marshland crabs. I have an ancient Rebel Xsi which works fine but I'm assuming is about as basic as you can get. Looking to spend around $700 and am interested in the Canon EF 100-400mm IS model, but I have no idea what a reasonable price for a used one is, or how much things like dust and fungus would affect the value. Also with things looking like dslrs might not be the preferred tech in a few years, not sure how transitioning the lens to a new body with adapter would work. Pretty much totally clueless as to the best path to take.
