He said manual aperture not manual focus. You may not know this, but automatic aperture was a big deal back in the day. Pic related is a M42 lens with switchable automatic aperture. You can turn it off to use it on manual cameras. Some lenses don't have this, so you're stuck in wide open if your camera is manual. It's fixable but it requires modifying the lens. An automatic camera depresses the pin when taking the photo so you focus wide open and capture stopped-down.
Additionally, there's nothing wrong with using adapted old glass and you don't need the latest MILC to do it. Literally any DSLR that isn't a Nikon can pull it off with just a metal adapter ring.
