Learn how to focus on a bright Star with live view. Open live view, zoom to 10x, and manually focus to zero in as good as you can. This is essential
Look up the 500 rule to know how long your shutter speed can run to avoid Star trails. In short, divide 500 by your focal length. 500/ 50mm lens = 10 second exposure, though I usually go down a second or two.
