I often play on the right edge because that's my style but it may be a tad too much for some.
Sometimes it's too bright for me too so I go back and start the editing process all over again from the negative, or just lower a curve on luminosity blending if I think that does the trick.
That's why you see "v2/v3/v4" and so on in filenames.
If I got it right, I think you should see the color version of pic related well balanced.
Composition is nothing to brag about but it's a good example of an image with both shadows and strong highlights.
