I have almost the same kit OP.
on camera flash almost always looks like ass. If I have to use a flash for an event I use a Vivitar 285 on a bracket, it looks kind of funny with a small camera like the GXR on a bracket but it really helps with the image.
what I use:
Nikon AS-15 hot shoe to PC adapter
Paramount curly pc sync cable
Vivitar 285
Custom Bracket Digital-T
The built in flash I find doesn't get over the lens, even a small external will help with that but if you can go off camera is always best even if you use a sync cord and go 2 handed
