Try craigslist or ebay and find a strobe with a trigger that works for your camera. Doesn't have to be a good one....just one that works. And a single light is perfect...make it work with one light.
After years fucking around in the studio I find that the further the light is and the longer the lens is the better it looks. So I'll shoot portraits between a 50mm to 70mm. Then crank a 1k strobe up to like 85%.
The light for these photos are inside a large reflective Octo Softbox with no diffusion. About 7' high 8' away from her.
