So the connection I'm seeing here is that both this photo and the Kate Moss pic above had 1) subject matter that is famous (i.e., a well known phenomenon with an intense media representation); 2) a potent vehicle for distribution and circulation in Asahi Camera and Vogue, respectively; 3) a famous photographer as their author--Moriyama and Testino. And I guess also as a sub-point to 3): 3.5) they were both "created" in the darkroom, i.e. they evidence their taker's distinct style.
I guess that's a pretty reasonable definition of the essence of photography--1) record something important, 2) be widely circulated as an image, 3) stylistically index the identity of your famous author--although it's a little bit way too undemocratic for my taste.
