No you were paying for people who were proficient at marketing. Same as it is today. The people who are making any money are good at promoting themselves.

And add to that Craigslist. But it has truly become the old axiom of you get what you pay for. That and the internet has destroyed it as well with the absolute flood of average imagery. Mediocrity has become top shelf.
